피아첸차의 성 콘라도(Saint Conrad of Piacenza)는 이탈리아의 귀족으로 어려서 귀족의 딸과 결혼했다.
Saint Conrad of Piacenza was an Italian nobleman who married a nobleman's daughter at a young age.
평소 사냥을 즐기는 그는 어느 날 사냥을 나갔다가 사냥감이 덤불 속에 숨자 하인들에게 덤불을 태우라고 명했다.
He, who enjoyed hunting, went out hunting one day and when his prey hid in the bushes, he ordered his servants to burn the bushes.
그때 갑자기 강풍이 휘몰아쳐서 옥수수밭을 비롯해 숲 전체를 태우고 인근 마을까지 불태우는 불상사로 번졌다.
At that time, a strong wind suddenly blew up, burning the entire forest, including the corn field, and burning down the nearby village.
거센 불길에 당황한 그는 그 자리에서 도망쳤고, 근처에 있던 한 가난한 농부가 방화범으로 오해받아 사형선고까지 받게 되었다.
Embarrassed by the strong flames, he ran away from the scene, and a poor farmer nearby was mistaken for an arsonist and was sentenced to death.
뒤늦게 한 소작농이 누명을 쓴 사실을 알게 된 그는 고심 끝에 재판관 앞에 가서 자신의 실수로 불이 났음을 고백했다. 그리고 자신의 전 재산으로 그 피해를 보상하기로 약속하고 이를 실행했다.
He later found out that a peasant had been falsely accused, and after much deliberation, he went before the judge and confessed that the fire was caused by his own mistake. And he promised to compensate for the damage with all his assets and did so.
이 모든 일을 겪으면서 그와 그의 아내는 재물이 부질없음을 깨닫고 이 모든 일이 다 하느님의 섭리임을 받아들이게 되었다.
Through all of this, he and his wife realized that their wealth was useless and accepted that all of this was God's providence.
그래서 그는 수하 사람들을 모두 자유로운 신분으로 해방해주고 아내는 클라라회(Poor Clares)에 입회하도록 주선한 후 자신은 작은 형제회의 재속 3회원(Third Order of St. Francis)이 되어 순례자의 삶을 시작했다.
So he freed all of his subordinates and arranged for his wife to join the Poor Clares. He then became a member of the Third Order of St. Francis and began his life as a pilgrim.
그는 로마와 예루살렘 성지를 순례하고 어느 한적한 곳의 동굴에서 30년 이상을 살았다. 만년에 그의 영성은 더욱 높은 경지에 도달했고, 예언과 기적의 은사도 받았다.
He made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land of Rome and Jerusalem and lived in a cave in a secluded place for more than 30 years. In his later years, his spirituality reached a higher level, and he also received the gifts of prophecy and miracles.
그는 사람들로부터 숨은 은둔생활을 원했지만 그의 뛰어난 성덕 때문에 수많은 사람이 그의 도움과 지도를 받고자 몰려들었다.
He wanted to live a secluded life, hidden from people, but because of his outstanding holiness, many people flocked to him to receive his help and guidance.
선종하기 얼마 전, 그는 주교를 방문해 고해성사를 본 후 새들과 야생동물들을 벗 삼아 살다가 십자가 앞에서 무릎을 꿇고 기도하면서 선종하였다.
Not long before his death, he visited the bishop, went to confession, lived with birds and wild animals as friends, and died kneeling in front of the cross and praying.
