성 오스카 로메로(Saint Óscar Romero)는 1917년 8월 15일 엘살바도르(El Salvador)에서 태어났다.
Saint Óscar Romero was born on August 15, 1917 in El Salvador.
그는 목수가 되길 원하는 아버지를 설득했고 사제품을 받았다. 그의 가족들은 제2차 세계대전으로 인한 여행 제한 때문에 서품식에 참석하지 못했다.
He persuaded his father, who wanted him to become a carpenter, and was ordained a priest. His family was unable to attend the ordination ceremony due to travel restrictions caused by World War II.

While holding key positions, he devoted himself to protecting the traditional teachings of the Catholic Church and became a fairly conservative figure.

When he was appointed archbishop, he was welcomed by the government and vested interests, but many priests who devoted themselves to the poor and oppressed did not hide their disappointment.

Meanwhile, an incident occurred in which Father Rutilio Grande, who not only defended and devoted himself to poor peasants but also had a long personal friendship with them, was murdered.
이 사건은 그의 삶에 일대 전환점이 되었다. 그는 정부의 신속한 수사를 촉구했지만 그의 요구는 무시되었고, 검열을 받는 언론은 조용하기만 했다.
This incident became a turning point in his life. He urged the government to quickly investigate, but his demands were ignored and the censored media remained silent.
장례미사가 열리던 날 그는 강론 중에 다음과 같이 말했다.
On the day of the funeral mass, he said the following during his sermon:
“살인한 형제들이여, 당신들에게 말하고자 하노니, 우리는 당신들을 사랑하며 하느님께 당신들의 마음을 대신해 참회를 빈다. 왜냐하면 교회는 증오할 수 없으며 어떠한 적도 가지고 있지 않기 때문이다 이 자리에 모인 사제 가운데 한 명이라도 건드리는 것은 곧 나를 건드리는 것이다.”
“Brothers who murdered, we tell you, we love you and we ask for penance on behalf of your hearts to God. Because the Church cannot hate and has no enemies. If you touch one of the priests gathered here, you touch me.”
정부의 면담 제의도 거부하고, 전국에 방송되는 라디오를 통해 주일마다 고문당한 이들과 살해당한 이들, 투옥된 이들과 고통받는 이들을 위해 강론을 했다.
He refused the government's offer to meet, and gave sermons every Sunday on radio broadcast nationwide for the tortured, the murdered, the imprisoned, and the suffering.

He faced violence more courageously and in a non-violent way. However, the military regime's atrocities and persecution continued without stopping.

Unable to watch this, he stood on the side of the poor and powerless without hesitation and raised his voice on the issues of poverty and social justice.
자신의 죽음을 예감한 듯 피살되기 얼마 전 한 기자에게 털어놓은 말은 그의 유언이 되었다.
The words he confided to a reporter shortly before he was murdered, as if he had a premonition of his own death, became his last words.
“그들이 나를 죽인다면, 엘살바도르 민중 가운데 부활할 것이다. 살해 위협이 현실로 드러난다면, 그 순간 엘살바도르의 구원과 부활을 위해 내 피를 하느님께 기꺼이 바칠 것이다. 내 피를 희망의 표지와 자유의 씨앗으로 삼으소서!”
“If they kill me, I will be resurrected among the people of El Salvador. If the death threat turns out to be real, at that moment I will willingly offer my blood to God for the salvation and resurrection of El Salvador. Let my blood be a sign of hope and a seed of freedom!”
그는 암 환자를 위한 미사를 집전하며 강론을 마치고 제단 중앙에 섰을 때 자동차를 타고 온 무장괴한으로부터 가슴에 총을 맞고 숨을 거두었다.
He was celebrating mass for cancer patients, and as he stood in the center of the altar after finishing his sermon, he was shot in the chest by an gunman who came in a car and died.
