에텔드레다(Etheldreda)의 의미는 ‘고상한, 고귀한 힘’이라는 뜻이다.

The meaning of Etheldreda is ‘noble, noble power.’ 

 

성녀 에텔드레다(Saint Etheldreda)는 영국에서 태어났으며 어린 나이에 시집을 갔다. 그러나 결혼 후 불과 3년 만에 남편이 죽었을 뿐만 아니라 그녀가 너무 어렸기 떄문에 동정을 잃지 않았다고 한다.

Saint Etheldreda was born in England and married at a young age. However, it is said that she did not lose her virginity because not only did her husband die just three years after her marriage, but she was too young. 

 

그녀는 남편의 사망과 함께 상속 받은 섬에서 5년을 살다가 정치적인 이유로 재혼하게 되었다.

She lived on the island she inherited upon her husband's death for five years and then remarried for political reasons. 

 

그 당시에도 어린 소녀로서 평생 동정을 지키고 싶다는 그녀의 뜻을 남편도 수용했지만, 왕위에 오르고 어느덧 결혼생활 12년을 맞은 남편이 자신의 권리를 요구했을 때 그녀는 이미 하느님께 자신을 봉헌한 지 오래되었다는 이유로 거부하였다.

Even at that time, as a young girl, her husband accepted her wish to remain a virgin for the rest of her life, but when her husband, who had ascended the throne and had already been married for 12 years, demanded his rights, she had already consecrated herself to God long ago. It was rejected on the grounds that 

 

이후 그녀는 주교에게 도움을 청해 남편의 동의를 얻고 수도 생활을 시작하였고 수녀원장으로서 봉헌된 삶을 살았던 그녀는 679년에 선종하였다.

Afterwards, she asked the bishop for help, obtained her husband's consent, and began a monastic life. She lived a consecrated life as an abbess and died in 679.
