[천주교 세례명] “회개하여라. 하늘 나라가 가까이 왔다.” 세례자 성 요한(Saint John the Baptist)

세례자 성 요한(Saint John the Baptist)는 성 즈카르야(Saint Zechariah)와 성녀 엘리사벳(Saint Elizabeth)의 아들로 태어났다.

Saint John the Baptist was the son of Saint Zechariah and Saint Elizabeth. 

 

나이가 들도록 아이가 없었던 성 즈카르야(Saint Zechariah)가 사제 직무를 수행하기 위해 성소에 분향하러 들어갔다가 가브리엘(Gabriel) 대천사 발현을 목격하고, 아들의 탄생 예고를 들었다.

Saint Zechariah, who had no children until he was old, went into the sanctuary to burn incense to perform his priestly duties and witnessed the apparition of the Archangel Gabriel and heard the announcement of the birth of a son. 

 

그러고 나서 아이를 못 낳는 여자일 뿐 아니라 이미 나이가 많았던 성녀 엘리사벳(Saint Elizabeth)이 잉태하여 아들을 낳았고, 천사가 일러준 대로 아기가 태어난 뒤에 그 이름을 요한(John)이라 하였다.

Then, Saint Elizabeth, who was not only a barren woman but also an old woman, conceived and gave birth to a son. As the angel had told her, the child was born and named him John. 

 

그는 서기 27년경까지 유다 광야에서 낙타 털로 된 옷을 입고 메뚜기와 들꿀을 먹으며 은수자로 살았다.

He lived as a hermit in the wilderness of Judah, wearing clothes made of camel hair and eating locusts and wild honey until about 27 AD. 

 

티베리우스 황제의 치세 15년, 그의 나이 서른 즈음에 하느님의 말씀을 받고 요르단 부근의 모든 지방을 다니며 죄의 용서를 위한 회개의 세례를 선포했다.

In the 15th year of the reign of Emperor Tiberius, when he was about 30 years old, he received the word of God and traveled to all the regions around Jordan, proclaiming the baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 

 

그는 “회개하여라. 하늘 나라가 가까이 왔다.”라고 외치며 요르단 강에서 백성들에게 세례를 주었다.

He said, “Repent. He shouted, “The kingdom of heaven has come near,” and baptized the people in the Jordan River. 

 

그리고 예수님께서 그에게 세례를 받으려고 오실 때 그분이 이스라엘이 기다리던 구세주이심을 알아보고는 “제가 선생님께 세례를 받아야 할 터인데 선생님께서 저에게 오시다니요?” 하면서 말렸다.

And when Jesus came to him to be baptized, he recognized him as the Savior Israel had been waiting for and said, “I need to be baptized by you, and you are coming to me?” 

 

그러나 그리스도의 뜻대로 주님께 세례를 드리며 삼위일체 하느님의 현존을 목격한 그는 예수님께서 갈릴래아로 떠나신 뒤에도 요르단 계곡에서 회개의 설교를 계속하였다.

However, after baptizing the Lord according to Christ's will and witnessing the presence of the Trinity, he continued to preach repentance in the Jordan Valley even after Jesus left for Galilee. 

 

갈릴래아의 영주 헤로데가 그의 언행과 군중들에 대한 그의 예언자적 권위를 두려워하던 중, 어처구니없는 이유를 들어 그를 감옥에 가둔 적이 있었다.

There was a time when Herod, the lord of Galilee, feared his words and actions and his prophetic authority over the crowds, and imprisoned him for a ridiculous reason. 

 

그가 헤로데의 동생의 아내와 결혼한 것은 옳지 않다며 공개적으로 비난했기 때문이었다.

This was because he publicly criticized him for marrying Herod's brother's wife. 

 

이 떄문에 그를 눈엣가시로 여기던 헤로디아는 간계를 꾸며 헤로데의 생일잔치 때 손님들 앞에서 춤을 추어 그를 즐겁게 한 딸에게 그의 머리를 청하게 했다.

Because of this, Herodias, who considered him a thorn in her eyes, concocted a trick and had her daughter, who entertained Herod by dancing in front of the guests at his birthday party, ask for his head. 

 

헤로데는 손님들 앞에서 한 맹세를 들어 그를 결국 참수하였다.

Herod ended up beheading him because of the oath he had sworn in front of his guests.
