성 요셉 카파소(Saint Joseph Cafasso)는 이탈리아 부유한 농부 집안에서 태어났다. 척추 장애를 지닌 채 태어난 그는 평생 구부정한 자세로 살았다.
Saint Joseph Cafasso was born into a wealthy Italian farmer's family. He was born with a spinal disorder and lived in a hunched posture his entire life.
그는 신학교에 입학해 1833년 사제품을 받았다. 대학에서 신학을 전공한 그는 졸업한 뒤 신학교에서 학생들을 가르쳤는데, 명강의로 학생들에게 인기가 높았다.
He entered the seminary and was ordained a priest in 1833. He majored in theology in college and taught students at a seminary after graduating. He was popular with students for his excellent lectures.
또한 그는 가난한 이들에게 대한 사랑과 봉사에도 뛰어났는데, 특별히 죄수들 특히 사형수들에 대한 돌봄에 매우 열심이었다.
He was also outstanding in his love and service to the poor, and was especially zealous in caring for prisoners, especially those on death row.
그는 또한 설교가로서 당시 유행하던 이단 얀세니즘을 물리치는 데 앞장섰다.
As a preacher, he also took the lead in defeating the heresy of Jansenism that was popular at the time.
사제들의 모범이요 교사, 가난한 이들과 죄수들의 친구가 되었던 그는 1860년 6월 23일 49세의 일기로 선종하였다.
An example to priests, a teacher, and a friend to the poor and prisoners, he died at the age of 49 on June 23, 1860.
