성녀 파비올라(Saint Fabiola)는 로마의 유명한 귀족 가문인 파비아가(Fabia family)에서 태어났다.
Saint Fabiola was born into the Fabia family, a famous noble family in Rome.
그녀는 얼마 동안은 성 히에로니무스(Saint Jerome)의 후원자로 활동했으나 오래지 않아 그만두었다.
She served as patron of Saint Jerome for some time, but soon ceased to do so.
그녀는 결혼 후 남편의 너무도 방탕한 생활로 말미암아 이혼에 이르렀고 그녀 자신도 사회생활에서 멀어질 수밖에 없었다.
After her marriage, her husband's extravagant lifestyle led to divorce and she herself had no choice but to withdraw from social life.
그러나 그녀는 다른 위로를 찾게 되었지만 이는 교회법에 어긋났기 때문에 로마의 동료 그리스도인 사이에서 큰 논란이 되었다.
However, she found another consolation, which caused great controversy among her fellow Christians in Rome because it was against church law.
즉 그녀가 이혼한 상태에서 재혼하여 큰 논란을 일으킨 것이었다. 오래지 않아 두 남자가 모두 죽게 되자 그녀는 공개적인 속죄를 하고 교회로 되돌아와도 좋다는 허락을 받았다.
In other words, she remarried while divorced, causing great controversy. Before long both men were dead, and she made a public atonement and was permitted to return to the church.
이때부터 그녀는 이전의 화려한 생활을 완전히 청산하고 교회를 돕는 일과 자선활동에 헌신하기 시작했다.
From this time on, she completely gave up her previous extravagant life and began to devote herself to helping the church and charity work.
395년에 베들레헴을 순례하였고, 그곳에서 성 히에로니무스(Saint Jerome)를 다시 만났다. 그녀는 그곳에 집을 짓고 정착하여 성 히에로니무스(Saint Jerome)의 성경 번역 사업을 후원하고자 했다.
In 395 he made a pilgrimage to Bethlehem, where he met Saint Jerome again. She built a house there and settled there, intending to support Saint Jerome's work of translating the Bible.
그러나 자신이 원하던 조용한 생활을 하는 데 어려움을 겪었는데 이는 그녀의 성격과 그런 생활과 잘 맞지 않았기 때문이었다.
However, she had difficulty living the quiet life she wanted because it did not fit well with her personality.
이런 상황에서 팔레스티나(Palestina) 신자들을 지도하는 문제를 두고 성 히에로니무스(Saint Jerome)와 예루살렘의 총대주교 사이에 논쟁이 벌어졌다.
In this situation, a dispute arose between Saint Jerome and the Patriarch of Jerusalem over the leadership of the believers in Palestine.
게다가 훈족들이 이 지역을 위협했기 때문에 그녀는 성 히에로니무스(Saint Jerome)와 그의 후원자들과 함께 야파(Jaffa) 항구로 피신했다가 로마로 돌아왔다.
Moreover, because the Huns were threatening the region, she fled with Saint Jerome and his supporters to the port of Jaffa and returned to Rome.
로마에서도 그녀는 자선사업을 계속했는데 특히 성녀 바울라(Saint Paula)의 사위인 성 팜마키우스(Saint Pammachius)와 함께 병자와 순례자를 위한 자선병원을 인공 항구인 포르투스(Portus)에 세웠다.
In Rome, she continued her charitable work, and in particular, together with Saint Pammachius, the son-in-law of Saint Paula, she established a charitable hospital for the sick and pilgrims at the artificial port of Portus.
이 병원은 서양 최초의 가톨릭 병원으로 여겨진다. 그러나 이러한 활동조차도 그녀의 모든 열정을 만족시켜 주지 못했다고 한다.
This hospital is believed to be the first Catholic hospital in the West. However, it is said that even these activities did not satisfy all of her passions.
그녀는 죽음이 다가오는 순간에도 새로운 사업을 계획할 정도로 헌신적이고 정열적이었다. 399년 그녀가 로마에서 선종했을 때 그녀의 장례식에는 로마의 모든 사람이 참석했다고 한다.
She was so dedicated and passionate that she planned a new business even as she neared death. When she died in Rome in 399, it is said that everyone in Rome attended her funeral.
