사로프의 성 세라핌(Saint Seraphim of Sarov)은 1759년 7월 19일 러시아에서 태어났다.
Saint Seraphim of Sarov was born in Russia on July 19, 1759.
어린 시절부터 여러 번 기적을 경험한 그는 상인인 형을 돕던 중 마음속으로 수도생활의 부르심을 깨달아 1776년 동료들과 함께 키예프(Kiev) 순례를 떠났다.
Having experienced miracles several times since childhood, he realized his calling to monastic life while helping his brother, a merchant, and went on a pilgrimage to Kiev with his colleagues in 1776.
수도생활에 대한 확신을 가진 그는 1778년 19세의 나이로 사로프(Sarov) 수도원에 입회하였다. 그 후 1786년에 서원을 하고 ‘열정’이라는 뜻의 세라핌(Seraphim)이라는 수도명을 받았다. 1793년에 그는 사제로 서품되었다.
Convinced of monastic life, he entered the Sarov monastery in 1778 at the age of 19. Afterwards, he made his vows in 1786 and received the monastic name Seraphim, which means ‘passion.’ In 1793 he was ordained a priest.
그는 사로프에서 몇 마일 떨어진 숲에서 은둔생활을 하기 위하여 수도원을 떠났다. 그는 많은 수도원으로부터 수도원장을 맡아주기를 요청받았으나 모두 거절하였다.
He left the monastery to live a secluded life in the woods a few miles from Sarov. He was asked to serve as abbot by many monasteries, but he refused them all.
1804년에는 세 명의 강도들에게 심한 매를 맞아 곧 수도원에 옮겨졌으나 성모 마리아에 의해 기적적으로 치유되어 숲으로 다시 돌아왔다.
In 1804, he was severely beaten by three robbers and was soon taken to a monastery, but was miraculously healed by the Virgin Mary and returned to the forest.
그 뒤 그는 침묵과 고요 속에서 세상 사람들의 회개를 위한 기도를 하며 생활하였다. 1810년 질병과 수도원장을 수행해야 할 의무 때문에 사로프(Sarov)의 수도원으로 되돌아왔지만 그는 수 년 동안 격리된 작은 방에서 완전한 은둔생활을 하였다.
After that, he lived in silence and silence, praying for the repentance of the people of the world. In 1810, due to illness and the duties of abbot, he returned to the monastery in Sarov, but for several years he lived in complete seclusion in a small, isolated room.
1815년에 성모 마리아의 환시를 체험한 후부터는 자신을 찾아오는 수많은 방문자들에게 영적 상담을 해주었다.
After experiencing a vision of the Virgin Mary in 1815, he provided spiritual counseling to numerous visitors.
1825년에는 다시 은둔자가 되어서 영적 사부 혹은 영성 지도자로서 특히 가난하고 소외된 이들에게 친절과 사랑을 베풀었다.
In 1825, he became a hermit again, and as a spiritual teacher or spiritual leader, he showed kindness and love, especially to the poor and marginalized.
1832년부터 죽음이 가까워짐을 깨달은 그는 자신의 묘 자리를 미리 정해 놓고 자신의 방 입구에 놓은 관 앞에서 묵상에 잠겨 있다가 종종 졸도하기도 하였다.
From 1832, when he realized that death was approaching, he decided on a place for his grave in advance and meditated in front of the coffin placed at the entrance of his room, often falling into a faint.
이때 많은 기적적인 행적을 남겼으며 1833년 1월 2일 그는 성화(icon) 성모 마리아를 바라보며 그 앞에 무릎을 꿇고 숨진 채 발견되었다.
At this time, he left behind many miraculous deeds, and on January 2, 1833, he was found dead while kneeling in front of the icon Virgin Mary.
그의 옷은 그의 손에서 떨어진 촛불에 불타 버린 상태 였다. 그가 사망한 후 그의 무덤을 참배하던 사람들에게 많은 기적이 일어났다.
His clothes had been burned by a candle that had fallen from his hand. After his death, many miracles happened to those who visited his tomb.
