성 알바노 로(Saint Alban Roe)는 1583년 7월 20일 영국에서 태어났다. 그의 초기 생애에 대해서는 자세히 알려진 것이 없다.  

Saint Alban Roe was born in England on July 20, 1583. No details are known about his early life. 

 

그는 프로테스탄트(개신교) 신자로 성장한 후 그의 형제 제임스(James)와 함께 가톨릭으로 개종했고 나중에 둘 다 베네딕토회 수도사가 되었다.

He was raised as a Protestant, then converted to Catholicism with his brother James, and both later became Benedictine monks. 

 

그의 개종 체험도 이례적이었다. 그는 감옥에 갇힌 어느 가톨릭 신자를 프로테스탄트로 개종시키려고 했지만, 그와의 논쟁에서 패배하고 말았다.

His conversion experience was also unusual. He attempted to convert an imprisoned Catholic to Protestantism, but lost the argument. 

 

자신의 종교적 확신에 대해 불안해하던 그는 가톨릭 사제들을 만나 토론하면서 자신의 잘못을 깨닫고 가톨릭 신앙을 받아들이게 되었다. 

He was anxious about his religious convictions, but after meeting and discussing with Catholic priests, he realized his mistakes and accepted the Catholic faith. 

 

그는 하느님 안에 참된 보화가 있음을 발견하고 이웃에게도 그것을 전하고 싶은 열망을 느꼈다. 

He discovered that there was true treasure in God and felt a desire to share it with his neighbors. 

 

사제품을 받은 성 알바노 로(Saint Alban Roe)는 영국으로 가는 선교단에 합류해 런던으로 갔지만 도착 직후 체포되어 추방되었다.

After being ordained a priest, Saint Alban Roe joined a mission to England and went to London, but was arrested and exiled shortly after his arrival. 

 

그는 1618년에 다시 잉글랜드로 돌아왔지만 4개월 만에 체포되어 1623년까지 감옥에 갇혔다가 에스파냐 대사의 협조로 추방령을 받고 다시 두에로 돌아갔다. 

He returned to England in 1618, but was arrested after four months and imprisoned until 1623. With the cooperation of the Spanish ambassador, he received an order of exile and returned to Douai. 

 

그러나 그는 영국 선교에 대한 열정 때문에 2년 후 재차 입국했다가 체포되어 17년 동안이나 런던의 플리트 강변에 있는 플리트(Fleet) 감옥에서 지내야 했다. 

However, due to his passion for missionary work in England, he returned to the country two years later and was arrested and spent 17 years in Fleet Prison on the Fleet River in London.  

 

그는 또한 감옥에서 방문자를 맞이하는 것을 허락받아 방문자에게 기도를 가르치고 그들의 개종을 위해 노력해 실제 많은 열매를 거두었다. 

He was also permitted to receive visitors in prison, teaching them prayers and working to convert them, which actually bore fruit. 

 

1641년 그는 엄격한 뉴게이트(Newgate) 감옥으로 이송되었고 1642년 재판에서 가톨릭 사제라는 이유로 반역죄로 유죄 판결을 받았다. 

In 1641 he was sent to the strict Newgate prison, and at his trial in 1642 he was found guilty of treason because he was a Catholic priest. 

 

이후 그는 런던의 타이번(Tyburn)으로 끌려가 교수형과 극형을 받고 순교하였다. 

Afterwards, he was taken to Tyburn, London, where he was hanged and executed as a martyr.
