아르메니아(Armenia)의 밀리테네(Militene)에서 어느 부유한 집안의 아들로 태어난 성 대 에우티미오(Saint Euthymius the Great)는 그곳의 주교 밑에서 공부하고 사제로 서품되었다. 

Born into a wealthy family in Militene, Armenia, Saint Euthymius the Great studied under the local bishop and was ordained a priest. 

 

그 후 그는 교구 내의 수도원 책임자로 활동하다가 29세 되던 해에 자신도 예루살렘 교외의 파란(Pharan) 수도원에서 수도자가 되었다.

After that, he worked as the director of a monastery in the diocese, and at the age of 29, he became a monk at the Pharan Monastery on the outskirts of Jerusalem. 

 

411년경에 그는 그곳을 떠나 동료들과 함께 예리코(Jericho) 근교의 어느 동굴에서 은수자 생활을 시작하였다.

Around 411, he left there and began living as a hermit with his companions in a cave near Jericho. 

 

하지만 수많은 제자들이 몰려오므로 그는 테옥티스투스(Theoctistus)를 수도원장으로 임명하고 자신은 더 한적한 곳으로 물러났다.

However, as so many disciples flocked to him, he appointed Theoctistus as abbot and withdrew to a more secluded place. 

 

이곳에서도 많은 제자들이 생겼고 또 수많은 아랍인들이 포함된 개종자를 얻었다.

Here too, many disciples were made and many converts were gained, including many Arabs. 

 

이리하여 예루살렘의 총대주교인 유베날리스(Juvenalis)는 그를 주교로 임명하여 아랍 개종자들을 사목토록 배려하였고 예루살렘에서 예리코로 가는 길목에 그를 위한 수도원을 세워주었다.

Accordingly, Juvenalis, the Patriarch of Jerusalem, appointed him as a bishop, provided pastoral care for Arab converts, and built a monastery for him on the road from Jerusalem to Jericho. 

 

그는 수많은 군중들에게 설교하여 개종자를 얻었는데, 그들 중에는 황제 테오도시우스 2세의 미망인인 에우독시아(Eudoxia)도 포함되어 있다.

He preached to large crowds and won converts, including Eudoxia, the widow of Emperor Theodosius II. 

 

그녀는 그의 권고를 듣고 아리우스파(Arianism)에서 물러나 459년에 정통 가톨릭으로 되돌아왔다. 그는 사막에서 66년을 살다가 선종하였다.

She listened to his advice, withdrew from Arianism, and returned to orthodox Catholicism in 459. He died after living in the desert for 66 years.
