[천주교 세례명] 메시나의 성녀 에우스토키아(Saint Eustochia)

시칠리아(Sicilia) 섬에서 마태오(Matthaeus)가 메시나에서 설교할 때 젊은 백작 부인인 마틸다(Matilda)가 그의 지도를 받게 되었다.

On the island of Sicilia, when Matthaeus was preaching at Messina, the young countess Matilda came under his tutelage. 

 

그녀는 그 후 자신의 재산을 모두 포기하고 작은 형제회의 재속 3회원(Third Order of the Friars Minor)이 되었다.

She then gave up all her possessions and became a member of the Third Order of the Friars Minor. 

 

얼마 동안 그녀에게는 자식이 없었으나 하느님께 열렬히 기도드린 응답인지 딸 아이 하나를 갖게 되었는데, 어떤 행인이 백작 부인을 만나서 그 아이는 구유에서 낳아야 한다고 일러 주었다.

She had been childless for some time, but perhaps in response to her fervent prayers to God, she had a child, a daughter. A passerby met the countess and told her that the child should be born in a manger. 

 

그렇게 해서 아이를 낳고 보니 너무나 귀엽고 아름다운지라 이름을 스메랄도(Smeraldo)로 짓고 세례를 주었다. 스메랄도는 에메랄드를 뜻하는 시칠리아 말이다.

When the child was born, the child was so cute and beautiful that they named him Smeraldo and baptized him. Smeraldo is the Sicilian word for emerald.  

 

어릴 때부터 열심이던 이 아이는 아버지 베르나르두스(Bernardus)가 적임자를 골라 결혼 서명까지 하였으나 그녀 자신은 동정서원을 발하였다.

This girl, who had been zealous since she was young, had her father Bernardus select the right person and sign her marriage, but she herself uttered a vow of virginity. 

 

그런데 이상하게도 그 결혼 상대자는 결혼식을 올리기 전에 사망하고 말았다.

But strangely enough, the marriage partner died before the wedding. 

 

그 후 부친이 사망하자 그녀는 오빠들의 반대를 물리치고 바시코(Basico)에 있는 산타 마리아(Santa Maria)의 클라라회(the Order of the Poor Clares)에 입회하여 수도복을 받고 수도명을 에우스토키아(Eustochia)라고 하였다.

After her father died, she overcame the opposition of her brothers and joined the Order of the Poor Clares of Santa Maria in Basico, received religious habit, and took the name Eustochia. 

 

성녀 에우스토키아(Saint Eustochia)는 귀족 출신이면서도 가난 정신이 뛰어났고 우리 주님의 수난에 대한 신심과 통회 정신이 극히 열렬하여 모든 수녀회의 귀감이 되었다고 한다.

Saint Eustochia is said to have been of noble birth, but had an outstanding spirit of poverty, and her devotion to the Passion of Our Lord and spirit of contrition were so fervent that she became a role model for all convents. 

 

바시코(Basico)에서 11년을 살고난 뒤 그녀는 더욱 엄격한 규칙을 원하였는데 교황 칼리스투스 3세(Callistus III)가 성 프란치스코(Saint Franciscus)의 규칙을 따르는 수도회 설립을 인가하였다.

After living in Basico for 11 years, she wanted a stricter rule, and Pope Callistus III authorized the establishment of a monastic order following the rule of Saint Franciscus. 

 

그래서 그녀는 메시나의 몬테 베르지네(Monte Vergine)에 수도원을 세우고 회원을 모집하였으나 초창기에는 많은 어려움이 있었다.

So she established a monastery at Monte Vergine in Messina and recruited members, but there were many difficulties in the early days. 

 

성녀 에우스토키아(Saint Eustochia)는 1485년 1월 몬테 베르지네(Monte Vergine) 수도원에서 선종하였다.

Saint Eustochia died at the Monte Vergine Monastery in January 1485.

“성녀 에우스토키아 수녀는 참으로 훌륭한 모범이십니다. … 그녀는 십자가에 못 박히신 그리스도의 학교에서 근면하고 성실하게 공부하였습니다. 그리하여 그녀는 그리스도에 대한 앎이 날로 깊어졌고 은총의 놀라운 신비를 묵상하면서 그리스도에 대한 충실한 사랑도 점점 더 자라났습니다. 우리들의 모범이신 성녀에게 봉쇄 수도원은 단순히 세상사로부터 벗어나 하느님에게 피신하는 장소라는 의미로 국한되지 않았습니다. 성녀 에우스토키아 수녀는 철저한 고행과 극기 생활을 통하여 자신은 물론이고 모든 사람들이 빠지기 마련인 온갖 유혹과 욕심들을 하나씩 제거하면서 그리스도와 일치되어 있기를, 그리고 모든 사람들과도 일치되어 있기를 간절히 바랐습니다. 몬테베르지네에 있는 수도원의 작은 독방에서 성녀는 자신의 기도와 극기 보속의 행위를 전 세계 모든 사람들을 위하여 바쳤습니다. 그러한 기도와 극기 보속을 통하여 그녀는 자신이 모든 형제자매들 옆에 가까이 있기를 원하였고, 세상의 모든 고통들이 보다 가벼워지고 모든 사람들의 죄악을 하느님께서 용서하여 주시기를 간구하였습니다.”
