성 폰시아노(Saint Pontianus)는 스폴레토 지역 귀족 출신으로 18세의 젊은이였다.

Saint Pontianus was an 18-year-old young man from a noble family in the Spoleto area. 

 

그는 그리스도에 대한 신앙 때문에 재판관 파비아누스(Fabianus) 앞에 끌려가 신앙을 거부하기보다는 용감하게 고문과 죽음을 선택했다.

Because of his faith in Christ, he was brought before the judge Fabianus and bravely chose torture and death rather than reject his faith. 

 

로마 순교륙은 그의 고통의 과정을 비교적 상세히 전해주고 있다.

The Roman Martyrdom conveys the process of his suffering in comparative detail. 

 

그는 재판관의 명령으로 난폭하게 채찍질을 당하고, 맨발로 불타는 석탄 위를 걸어갔다.

He was violently whipped by order of the judge and walked barefoot over burning coals. 

 

하지만 불 위에서 아무런 해도 입지 않자, 그를 고문대 위에 올려놓고 철제 갈고리로 살점을 긁어댄 후 사자가 기다리는 지하 감옥에 던져버렸다.

But when no harm came to him over the fire, they placed him on a torture rack, scraped his flesh with iron hooks, and then threw him into a dungeon where a lion was waiting. 

 

그런 다음 납을 녹여 입에 붓는 등 잔혹한 형벌이 이어졌다. 그런데도 끝까지 굴복하지 않자 결국 참수형으로 그의 목숨을 끊었다.

Then cruel punishment followed, including melting lead and pouring it into the mouth. However, when he refused to give in until the end, his life was ended by beheading. 

 

그의 시신은 도시 성벽 밖 공동묘지에 묻혔고 후에 그 무덤 위에 그를 기념해 성당이 건립되었다.

His body was buried in a cemetery outside the city walls, and a cathedral was later built in his honor over his grave. 

 

그가 죽기 전에 “스폴레토는 흔들릴 것이나 무너지지 않을 것이다.”라고 예언했기 때문에 스폴레토에서 지진의 위험에서 보호해주도록 전구를 청하는 성인으로 알려져 있다.

Before his death, he predicted that “Spoleto will shake, but not fall,” so he is known as the saint who prayed for help in Spoleto to protect him from the danger of earthquakes. 

 

실제 1703년 그의 축일에 시작된 지진이 3주 정도 계속되면서 많은 사람이 죽었지만, 스폴레토에서는 한 명의 사망자도 없었다고 한다.

In fact, the earthquake that started on his feast day in 1703 lasted for about three weeks and killed many people, but it is said that no one died in Spoleto.
