프랑스에서 태어난 성 세바스티아노(Saint Sebastian)는 283년경에 로마에서 군인이 되었고 죽음으로써 신앙을 지키도록 했던 열렬한 그리스도인이었다.
Saint Sebastian, born in France, became a soldier in Rome around 283 and was a fervent Christian who defended his faith by dying.
그는 수많은 개종자를 얻었는데, 그들 중에는 재판장인 성 니코스트라투스(Saint Nicostratus)가 있었고, 그의 아내 성녀 조아(Saint Zoa)도 포함되어 있다.
He won many converts, including the judge Saint Nicostratus and his wife Saint Zoa.
특히 성녀 조아(Saint Zoa)는 벙어리였으나 그의 기도로 완쾌되었다고 한다.
In particular, Saint Zoa was said to have been mute, but was completely cured through his prayers.
그는 또 황제 디오클레티아누스로부터 친위대 대장으로 임명되었는데 황제는 그가 그리스도인인줄 몰랐다고 한다.
He was also appointed captain of the royal guard by Emperor Diocletian, but it is said that the emperor did not know that he was a Christian.
그가 신자임이 드러난 것은 막시미아누스 황제의 그리스도교 박해가 절정에 이르렀을 때였다. 그는 즉시 처형될 입장이 되었다.
It was when Emperor Maximian's persecution of Christians reached its peak that he was revealed to be a believer. He was immediately placed in a position to be executed.
그는 화살을 맞고 쓰러졌으나 성 카스툴루스(Saint Castulus)의 미망인인 성녀 이레네(Saint Irene)가 그의 시신을 찾으러 가서 보니 아직 살아있음을 보고 극진히 간호하여 회복시켰다.
He fell after being shot by an arrow, but Saint Irene, the widow of Saint Castulus, went to look for his body, found him still alive, and nursed him well to recover.
그 후 그는 황제에게 정면으로 도전하여 그리스도인에 대한 그의 잔인성을 고발하자 황제는 화가 나서 그를 몽둥이로 때려죽이도록 한 다음 로마의 하수구인 '클로아카 막시마(Cloaca Maxima)'에 던져 버렸다.
Afterwards, he directly challenged the emperor and accused him of his cruelty to Christians, and the emperor became angry and had him beaten to death with a club and then thrown into the Cloaca Maxima, a sewer in Rome.
그의 죽음과 용기는 신자들에게 깊은 감명을 주었다.
His death and courage deeply impressed believers.
한편 순교한 후에 그는 로마에 사는 루치나(Lucina)라는 부인의 꿈에 나타나 하수구에서 자신의 시신을 찾아서 지금의 성 세바스티아노(Saint Sebastian) 성당이 있는 자리 근처의 지하 묘지에 매장해 달라고 부탁했다고 한다.
Meanwhile, after his martyrdom, he is said to have appeared in a dream to a woman named Lucina, who lived in Rome, and asked her to retrieve his body from the sewers and bury it in the catacombs near the current site of the Cathedral of Saint Sebastian.
