성 예로니모 에밀리아니(Saint Jerome Emiliani)는 1486년 이탈리아에서 태어났으며 젊은 나이에 군인이 되었다.
Saint Jerome Emiliani was born in Italy in 1486 and became a soldier at a young age.
그러던 중 그는 1511년에 지휘관이 되었지만 적에게 붙잡혀 포로가 되었다. 감옥생활은 그에게 자신의 삶을 되돌아보고 회개하도록 하였다.
Meanwhile, he became a commander in 1511, but was captured by the enemy and taken prisoner. Prison life made him reflect on his life and repent.
그 후 기적적으로 지하 감옥을 탈출한 그는 곧 트레비소의 마돈나 그란데(Madonna Grande) 성지를 순례하였다.
After miraculously escaping from the dungeon, he soon made a pilgrimage to the Madonna Grande in Treviso.
1518년 사제 서품을 받고 고향인 베네치아에 부임한 그는 페스트가 만연하고 또 기근의 희생자들이 날로 늘어가는 불행한 사태가 발발했을 때, 특별히 고아들을 돌보기로 맹세하였다.
After being ordained as a priest in 1518, he took up a post in his hometown of Venice. When the plague broke out and the number of famine victims increased day by day, he vowed to take special care of orphans.
그는 여러 곳에 고아원과 병원을 세우는 한편 거리의 여성들을 위한 보금자리를 마련해 주는 등 여러 가지 사회활동에 혼신의 힘을 다 바쳤다.
He devoted all his energy to various social activities, including establishing orphanages and hospitals in various places and providing shelter for street women.
1534년 그는 소마스카의 성직 수도회(Somaschi Fathers)를 설립하였다. 이 수도회의 주요 목표는 고아들을 돌보고 어린이들과 사제들을 교육하는데 있었다.
In 1534 he founded the Somaschi Fathers. The main goal of this order was to care for orphans and educate children and priests.
그는 병자들을 돌보는 일에 헌신하다가 결국 페스트에 감염되어 1537년 2월 8일 소마스카(Somascha)에서 선종하였다. 그는 고아들과 버림받은 청소년들의 수호성인(patron saint)으로 공경받고 있다.
He devoted himself to caring for the sick, but eventually became infected with the plague and died in Somascha on February 8, 1537. He is revered as the patron saint of orphans and abandoned youth.
