성 베다스토(Saint Vedast)는 프랑스에서 태어났다. 그는 젊어서 고향을 떠나 세상을 멀리하며 은둔 생활을 하던 중 어느 주교의 눈에 띄어 사제품을 받게 되었다.
Saint Vedast was born in France. He left his hometown at a young age and lived a secluded life away from the world, when he was noticed by a bishop and was ordained a priest.
그 당시 갈리아 지역으로 영토를 확장하던 클로비스 1세(Clovis I) 왕은 그의 아내인 성녀 클로틸다(Saint Clotildis)가 믿는 하느님이 자기에게 승리를 가져다준다면 그 하느님을 믿겠다고 서약한 바 있었다.
At that time, King Clovis I, who was expanding his territory into Gaul, had pledged to believe in the God of his wife, Saint Clotildis, if that God would bring him victory.
전투에서 승리를 거둔 클로비스 1세(Clovis I) 왕은 세례를 받고자 했고 자신과 함께 여행하며 세례 준비를 도와줄 사람으로 성 베다스토(Saint Vedast)을 선택했다.
After winning the battle, King Clovis I wanted to be baptized and chose Saint Vedasto to travel with him and help him prepare for baptism.
한 전승에 따르면 그들이 가고 있을 때 다리 위에서 자기 눈을 낫게 해 달라고 애원하는 한 눈먼 거지를 만나게 되었다. 그는 하느님께 기도한 후 그의 눈 위에 십자가를 그어 축복했는데, 그 즉시 시력이 회복되는 기적이 일어났다.
According to one legend, as they were going, they came across a blind beggar on a bridge who begged for healing for his eyes. After praying to God, he drew a cross over his eyes and blessed him, and immediately the miracle of restoration of his eyesight occurred.
이 기적은 왕의 신앙을 더욱 굳게 했을 뿐 아니라 수많은 프랑스 사람들을 개종하게 만든 중요한 계기가 되었다.
This miracle not only strengthened the king's faith, but also served as an important opportunity for the conversion of many French people.
40년 동안 이교도 지역의 복음화를 위해 헌신하다가 선종한 그는 눈병을 앓는 이들의 수호성인(Patron saint)으로서 공경을 받고 있다.
He died after dedicating himself to evangelization in pagan areas for 40 years, and is revered as the patron saint of those suffering from eye disease.
