도로테아(Dorothy)의 의미는 ‘하느님의 선물’을 뜻한다. 

The meaning of Dorothy is ‘gift from God.’ 

 

카이사레아의 성녀 도로테아(Saint Dorothy of Caesarea)는 디오클레티아누스 황제의 그리스도교 박해 때 체포되어 고문 기구에 매달려 혹독한 고통을 받고 심한 채찍질을 당하다가 마침내 그 지방 총독의 명령으로 참수형을 받아 순교했다고 한다.

It is said that Saint Dorothy of Caesarea was arrested during the persecution of Christians by Emperor Diocletian, was hung on a torture device, suffered greatly, and was whipped severely. Finally, she was beheaded and martyred at the order of the local governor. 

 

그녀는 카이사레아 지방의 초대 그리스도교 신자 중 한 명으로 덕행이 뛰어난 처녀였다. 그녀에게 반한 카이사레아 총독이 구혼했을 때, 그녀는 부도덕하고 방탕한 이교인 총독의 청혼을 단호히 거절했다.

She was one of the first Christians in the Caesarea region and a virgin of outstanding virtue. When the governor of Caesarea, who was enamored with her, courted her, she flatly refused the marriage proposal of the immoral and debauched pagan governor. 

 

그러자 총독은 품행이 좋지 않은 두 명의 그리스도인 여자를 보내 배교하도록 유혹했으나 오히려 그녀의 신앙에 감화되어 그들 모두 회개하고 말았다.

Then the governor sent two ill-behaved Christian women to tempt them into apostasy, but they were all influenced by her faith and ended up repenting. 

 

이에 분개한 총독은 그녀와 두 여자를 체포하여 감옥에 가두었다. 그녀는 심한 고문을 받으면서도 하느님께 의지하며 끝까지 신앙을 굳건히 지켰다.

The indignant governor arrested her and the two women and imprisoned them. Even though she was severely tortured, she relied on God and remained steadfast in her faith until the end. 

 

이런 태도는 그녀의 변호사이자 이교도였던 성 테오필루스(Saint Theophilus)까지도 감화시켰다.

This attitude even influenced her lawyer, the pagan Saint Theophilus. 

 

마침내 그녀는 사형 선고를 받고 형장으로 끌려가는 중에 그는 그녀에게 다음과 같이 청했다. “당신이 천국에 가면 그곳의 장미꽃을 나에게 보내주지 않겠소.” 그녀는 그러겠다고 약속했다.

Finally, she was sentenced to death and as she was being led to the execution ground, he asked her: “When you get to heaven, won’t you send me some roses from there?” She promised she would. 

 

형리 앞에서 무릎을 꿇은 그녀는 오로지 하느님을 찬미하는 기도만 하였다.

She knelt before her brother and prayed only praising God. 

 

그녀가 순교한 다음 날 아침, 한 천사가 그의 집 앞에 나타나 “이것은 도로테아(Dorothy)가 보내서 가져온 것입니다.”라고 하면서 장미꽃과 과일 바구니를 전하고 사라졌다.

The morning after her martyrdom, an angel appeared in front of his house and gave him roses and a basket of fruit, saying, “This is from Dorothy,” and then disappeared.  

 

이를 경험한 그는 그리스도교로 개종하고 얼마 뒤 그녀의 뒤를 따라 순교했다고 한다.

It is said that after experiencing this, he converted to Christianity and soon followed in her footsteps and became a martyr.
