교회 전승에 따르면 시칠리아의 성녀 아가타(Saint Agatha of Sicily)는 시칠리아(Sicilia)의 부유한 귀족 집안에서 태어났다.

According to church tradition, Saint Agatha of Sicily was born into a wealthy noble family in Sicily. 

 

어려서부터 신심이 깊었던 그녀는 일생을 하느님께 봉헌할 결심을 하고 스스로 정결 서원을 했다고 한다.

It is said that she, who was deeply religious from a young age, decided to dedicate her life to God and took a vow of chastity. 

 

아가타(Agatha)의 의미는  ‘선함’ 또는 ‘좋음’을 뜻한다.

The meaning of Agatha is ‘goodness’ or ‘goodness.’ 

 

이름만큼이나 착하고 아름다웠던 그녀의 미모에 반한 그 지방 총독 퀸티아누스(Quintianus)가 그녀에게 청혼하는 일이 일어났다.

Quintianus, the local governor, fell in love with her beauty, which was as kind and beautiful as her name, and proposed to her. 

 

당시는 데키우스 황제의 그리스도교에 대한 박해가 한창일 때였다. 청혼을 거절당한 총독은 그녀를 소유하려는 계략으로 박해를 이용하였다.

At that time, Emperor Decius' persecution of Christians was at its peak. After her marriage proposal was rejected, the governor used the persecution as a ploy to possess her. 

 

그녀가 끝까지 그의 제안을 거절하자 퀸티아누스(Quintianus)는 온갖 무자비한 고문을 가하고 그녀를 매음굴에 보내는 등 협박과 회유를 그치지 않았다.

When she refused his offer to the end, Quintianus did not stop threatening and cajoling her, including inflicting all kinds of merciless torture and sending her to a brothel. 

 

그 어떤 고통에도 그녀의 마음은 흔들리지 않았다. 그러자 퀸티아누스(Quintianus)는 그녀의 가슴을 도려내도록 명령했다.

Her heart did not waver no matter the pain. Then Quintianus ordered her breasts to be cut out. 

 

하지만 그녀는 “내 육체는 도려낼지라도 내 영혼을 도려낼 수 없을 것이오.”라고 당당히 말했다.

But she confidently said, “Even if you cut out my body, you will not be able to cut out my soul.” 

 

잔혹한 고문을 당한 후 아무런 치료를 받지 못하고 감옥에 갇혔을 때 그녀는 환시 중에 성 베드로(Saint Peter)를 보았다.

When she was imprisoned without treatment after being brutally tortured, she saw Saint Peter in a vision.  

 

성 베드로(Saint Peter)는 천사와 함께 나타나 그녀의 상처를 치료해주었다. 결국 총독은 그녀가 죽을 때까지 이글거리는 석탄불에 돌리면서 구워 죽였다고 전해지고 있다. 

Saint Peter appeared with an angel and healed her wounds. It is said that in the end, the governor roasted her over a blazing coal fire until she died. 

 

그녀는 처녀, 양치는 여자, 종 만드는 사람, 유리 제조공, 광부, 알프스 등반 안내자, 유방 관련 질병으로 고통받는 이, 간호사들의 수호성인으로 알려져 있다.

She is known as the patron saint of virgins, shepherds, bell makers, glass makers, miners, Alps mountaineering guides, those suffering from breast diseases, and nurses.
