성 루이지 스크로소피(Saint Luigi Scrosoppi)는 1804년 8월 4일 이탈리아에서 신심 깊은 가정에서 태어나 성장했다.
Saint Luigi Scrosoppi was born and raised in Italy on August 4, 1804 in a devout family.
12살 때 그는 신학교에 들어가 1827년 사제품을 받았다. 당시 기근과 전쟁 그리고 페스트로 말미암아 극심한 가난으로 고통 받고 있었다.
At the age of 12, he entered the seminary and was ordained a priest in 1827. At the time, they were suffering from extreme poverty due to famine, war, and pestilence.
그래서 그는 자신의 형제가 운영하던 고아원의 운영을 도와 그 주변 지역의 가난하고 버려진 소녀들을 모아 교육하는데 헌신하였다.
So, he dedicated himself to helping run the orphanage his brother ran and collecting and educating poor and abandoned girls from the surrounding area.
그가 하느님께 대한 굳은 신뢰 속에서 소녀들의 교육에 헌신하는 모습은 인근 지역에서 가난하고 버려진 이들을 위해 활동하던 몇몇 여성들의 마음을 움직였다.
His dedication to girls' education with strong trust in God touched the hearts of several women who worked for the poor and abandoned in nearby areas.
이 여성들은 재봉과 자수에 숙달된 기술을 갖고 있었고, 읽고 쓰고 계산하는 법을 가르칠 수 있었다.
These women were skilled in sewing and embroidery and could teach how to read, write, and do math.
그들은 서로 다른 연령대와 다양한 출신 배경을 갖고 있었지만 하느님의 손길에 이끌려 가난하고 소외된 이들 안에 살며 하느님을 섬기고자 했다.
Although they were of different ages and different backgrounds, they were guided by God's hand and sought to serve God by living among the poor and marginalized.
그의 영적 지도를 받으며 봉사하던 9명의 여성들은 마침내 1837년 2월 1일 모든 소유에서 벗어나 가난 안에서 하느님께 전적으로 자신을 헌신하는 삶을 살기로 선택했다.
On February 1, 1837, the nine women who served under his spiritual direction finally chose to break away from all their possessions and live a life of complete devotion to God in poverty.
이렇게 해서 하느님 섭리의 수녀회(Sisters of Providence of Saint Cajetan of Thiene)가 설립되었다.

그는 수녀들이 더욱 강인하게 성장할 수 있도록 때때로 그들의 신앙을 시험하기도 했다. 또한 허영과 공명심에 빠지지 않도록 인도하고 위선과 천박한 태도를 보일 때는 엄하게 대하기도 했다.
He sometimes tested the nuns' faith to help them grow stronger. He also guided them to avoid falling into vanity and greed, and treated them severely when they showed hypocrisy and superficial behavior.
그러면서도 항상 아버지다운 자애로써 수녀들의 약점을 바라보고 그들이 필요로 하는 것은 지원하고 위로하였다.
At the same time, he always looked upon the nuns' weaknesses with fatherly kindness and provided support and comfort when they needed it.
그는 일생 동안 모든 일을 행함에 있어서 가장 가난하고 버림받은 이들에 대한 우선적인 선택을 추구했다.
In everything he did throughout his life, he sought to give priority to the poorest and most abandoned.
하느님과의 깊은 일치와 오랜 세월의 경험을 통해 그는 영적인 지혜와 사람의 마음을 읽을 수 있는 특별한 직관력을 갖게 되었다.
Through his deep union with God and many years of experience, he gained spiritual wisdom and a special intuition that allowed him to read people's hearts.
그는 1883년 말 돌이킬 수 없을 정도로 건강이 악화되자 모든 자리에서 물러나 병마와 싸웠다. 자신의 마지막이 가까웠음을 알고 그는 모든 수녀들에게 마지막 인사말을 썼다.
At the end of 1883, when his health deteriorated irreversibly, he resigned from all positions and battled illness. Knowing that his end was near, he wrote a final greeting to all the nuns.
“나의 죽음 이후 수녀회는 많은 어려움을 겪을 것이다. 그러나 그 후에 새로운 삶이 주어질 것이다. 애덕! 애덕! 이것은 수녀회 가족의 정신이다. 영혼들을 구하고 애덕으로 그들을 구하여라.”
“After my death, the Convent will experience many difficulties. But after that, a new life will be given. Love! Love! This is the spirit of the Convent family. Save souls and save them with charity.”
