성 가에타노 카타노소(Saint Gaetano Catanoso)는 이탈리아의 항구도시의 작은 마을에서 태어났다. 그의 부모는 부유한 지주이자 모범적인 그리스도인이었다.
Saint Gaetano Catanoso was born in a small town in a port city in Italy. His parents were wealthy landowners and exemplary Christians.
그는 1902년 9월 20일에 사제품을 받았다. 그는 특히 예수님의 거룩한 얼굴에 대한 지대한 신심을 갖고 있었다. 그는 “그리스도의 성안(聖顔)은 나의 인생이고 그분은 나를 강하게 한다.”고 말했다.
He was ordained a priest on September 20, 1902. He especially had great devotion to the holy face of Jesus. He said, “The sacred face of Christ is my life and he strengthens me.”
그는 매우 다재다능한 사람으로서 부정적인 현실에서도 평화롭고 부지런히 봉사하였다. 그는 외부적인 요인에 의해서, 그것이 긍정적이든 부정적이든 제한되지 않았다.
He was a very versatile person and served peacefully and diligently even in negative situations. He was not limited by external factors, whether positive or negative.
그는 사제로서 자신의 의무는 모범이 되는 사람을 찾지 못해 타락할 위험에 처한 어린이와 젊은이들뿐만 아니라 소외된 노인들과 별도의 지원 없이 외로움에 놓인 사제들을 돕는 것임을 깨달았다.
He realized that his duty as a priest was to help not only children and young people who were at risk of being corrupted by lack of role models, but also marginalized elderly people and priests who were lonely and without support.
그는 다음과 같이 말하기도 했다. “버림받은 고아들을 지키고 구하기 위해 모든 활동을 합시다. 도처에 너무도 많은 위험과 비참함이 자리하고 있습니다. 예수님과 함께 버림받은 어린이와 젊은이에게 우리의 시선을 돌립시다. 오늘날 인간성은 그 어느 때보다도 더 윤리적으로 병들었습니다.”
He also said: “Let us do everything we can to protect and save abandoned orphans. There is so much danger and misery everywhere. With Jesus, let us turn our attention to abandoned children and young people. “Humanity today is more ethically sick than ever before.”
1934년 그는 ‘성 베로니카 딸들 수도회(the Suore Veroniche del Santo Volto)’를 설립하였다. 이 수도회는 항구한 보속의 기도, 겸손한 봉사, 교리교육 그리고 어린이 · 젊은이 · 사제 · 노인들에 대한 원조를 그 사명으로 하고 있다.
In 1934, he founded the ‘Suore Veroniche del Santo Volto’. The mission of this religious order is perpetual prayer of penance, humble service, catechesis, and assistance to children, youth, priests, and the elderly.
그는 1963년 4월 4일 모범적인 삶을 마치고 평화로이 선종하였다.
He passed away peacefully on April 4, 1963, after an exemplary life.
