파도바의 성 안토니오(Saint Anthony of Padua)는 1195년 포르투갈에서 귀족 가문의 아들로 태어났다. 그는 신앙심 깊은 부모의 영향을 받으며 자랐다.
Saint Anthony of Padua was born in Portugal in 1195 as the son of a noble family. He grew up under the influence of religious parents.
그는 15살 되는 해에 집 근처에 있는 수도회에 입회하였다. 1212년에는 자신을 찾아오는 친구와 친척들을 피하고자 코임브라의 성 십자가 참사 수도회(Canons Regular of the Holy Cross of Coimbra)로 옮겨 8년 동안 공부와 기도 생활에 전념하였다.
At the age of 15, he entered a monastery near his home. In 1212, to avoid friends and relatives visiting him, he moved to the Canons Regular of the Holy Cross of Coimbra and devoted himself to study and prayer for eight years.
그리고 1219년에 사제품을 받았다. 어느 날 그는 사제 서품식에 참가하였고 강론할 마땅한 사람이 없자 그가 맡게 되었다.
And he was ordained a priest in 1219. One day, he participated in a priestly ordination ceremony, and when there was no one suitable to preach, he took over.
그는 성경에 대한 해박한 지식과 차원 높은 교리 지식을 바탕으로 열정적인 강론을 해 많은 이들에게 감동을 주고 설교가로서의 놀라운 능력을 발휘하였다.
He gave passionate sermons based on his extensive knowledge of the Bible and high-level doctrinal knowledge, inspiring many people and demonstrating his amazing ability as a preacher.
그의 뛰어난 설교와 화술은 불같았고, 설득력이 있었으며, 모여든 군중들을 매료시켰다. 그가 가는 곳마다 군중이 구름처럼 운집하였다.
His outstanding sermons and speaking skills were fiery, persuasive, and captivating to the gathered crowd. Wherever he went, crowds gathered like clouds.
설교에 더 전념하기 위해 파도바로 거처를 옮긴 그는 그곳 사람 모두를 완전히 개종시키는 빛나는 업적을 세웠다.
He moved to Padua to focus more on preaching, and accomplished the brilliant feat of completely converting everyone there.
그는 도저히 빚을 갚을 수 없는 채무자들을 돕고, 옥에 갇힌 사람들을 석방하는 일을 비롯해 가난한 이들을 돕는데 힘썼고, 이단에 빠진 이들을 개종시키는 등 열정적으로 활동하였다.
He worked passionately to help debtors who could not repay their debts, to release those who were imprisoned, to help the poor, and to convert those who had fallen into heresy.
하지만 과도한 활동과 설교로 인해 기력이 약해진 그는 1231년 6월 13일 선종하였다.
However, his strength weakened due to excessive activity and preaching, and he died on June 13, 1231.
