성 알로이시오 곤자가(Saint Aloysius Gonzaga)는 1568년 3월 9일 이탈리아에서 태어났다. 그의 집안은 부유했지만 다소 야만적이고 부도덕하기도 했다.

Saint Aloysius Gonzaga was born in Italy on March 9, 1568. His family was wealthy, but also somewhat barbaric and immoral. 

 

하지만 신앙심 깊은 어머니는 사랑으로 그를 키우려고 노력하였다. 사제의 꿈을 키우던 그는 1583년 8월 15일 그는 예수회에 입회할 것을 결심하였다.

However, his religious mother tried to raise him with love. He dreamed of becoming a priest, and on August 15, 1583, he decided to join the Society of Jesus. 

 

그 소식을 들은 아버지는 완강히 반대했으나 아무 소용이 없었다. 그가 신학을 공부한 지 4년째 되던 1590년 로마 전역에 흑사병이 퍼졌다.

When my father heard the news, he stubbornly opposed it, but to no avail. In 1590, during his fourth year of studying theology, the Black Death spread throughout Rome. 

 

그는 자신의 몸을 아끼지 않고 병자들을 보살피고 그들이 성사를 받을 수 있도록 준비시켰다. 그렇게 헌신적으로 병자들을 간호하던 그는 자신도 흑사병에 전염되어 23세의 젊은 나이로 선종했다.

He devoted himself to caring for the sick and preparing them to receive the sacraments. While he was so dedicated in caring for the sick, he was also infected with the Black Death and died at the young age of 23. 

 

그는 신중하고 분별력 있게 모든 일을 잘 처리하는 뛰어난 학생이었다. 무엇보다도 그는 하느님에 대한 깊은 사랑과 신앙 안에서 어려서부터 정결을 지키며 살겠다는 굳은 의지를 갖고 있었고, 어떠한 반대에도 그 뜻을 굽히지 않았다.

He was an excellent student who handled everything carefully and sensibly. Above all, he had a firm will to live a chaste life from a young age, out of deep love and faith in God, and did not give up on his will despite any opposition. 

 

그리고 그는 수도 생활을 하면서 자신의 악습들을 극복하기 위해 엄청난 노력을 기울였으며, 자신의 자존심과 이기심을 이기기 위한 수련을 끊임없이 실천했다.

And while he lived as a monk, he made great efforts to overcome his bad habits and constantly practiced training to overcome his pride and selfishness.
