비티니아의 성녀 마리나(Saint Marina of Bithynia)는 오늘날 튀르키예에서 부유한 그리스도인 부모의 외동딸로 태어났다고 한다.

Saint Marina of Bithynia is said to have been born in modern-day Turkiye as the only daughter of wealthy Christian parents. 

 

어머니가 일찍 돌아가신 후 그녀는 신심 깊은 아버지에 의해 양육되었다. 그녀가 결혼할 나이에 이르자 아버지는 딸에게 맞는 남편을 찾아주고 수도원에 들어가고자 했다.

After her mother died early, she was raised by her devout father. When she reached marriageable age, her father wanted to find her a suitable husband and enter a monastery. 

 

하지만 그녀는 자신 또한 구원을 위해 동정녀로 살겠다고 간청했고, 아버지는 할 수 없이 딸에게 남자 옷을 입혀 함께 수도원에 들어갔다.

However, she pleaded that she too would live as a virgin for salvation, and her father had no choice but to dress her in men's clothes and enter a monastery with her. 

 

그녀는 10년 정도 아버지와 함께 기도와 금욕적 삶에 헌신했다. 아버지는 세상을 떠날 때가 되자 그녀에게 누구에게도 여자임을 드러내지 말고 항구하게 수도 생활에 정진하라고 당부했다.

She devoted herself to a life of prayer and asceticism with her father for about ten years. When it was time for her father to pass away, he advised her not to reveal that she was a woman to anyone and to continue to devote herself to monastic life. 

 

아버지가 선종하고 어느 날 그녀는 다른 수도사와 함께 볼일을 보러 이동하던 중 한 여인숙에 머물게 되었다. 그런데 여인숙 주인의 딸이 그곳에 머물던 로마 군인에게 강간을 당해 아이를 갖게 되었다.

One day after her father passed away, she stayed at an inn while traveling to run errands with another monk. However, the inn owner's daughter was raped by a Roman soldier who stayed there and became pregnant. 

 

그 여인은 임신한 사실이 드러나자 아버지에게 그녀가 그랬다고 거짓말을 했다. 여인숙 주인의 항의를 받은 수도원장은 그녀를 질책하고 수도원 밖으로 추방했다.

When the woman found out she was pregnant, she lied to her father and told him she had done so. After receiving a protest from the innkeeper, the abbot reprimanded her and expelled her from the monastery. 

 

그녀는 아무런 해명도 핑계도 대지 않고 수도원 문밖에서 걸식하며 지냈다. 아기를 낳은 여인은 젖뗄 무렵 아기를 수도원에 맡기고 떠났다.

She spent her days begging outside the monastery gate without any explanation or excuse. The woman who gave birth left the baby at a monastery when she was weaned. 

 

그녀는 침묵으로 일관하며 그 아기를 정성껏 키웠다. 그녀의 겸손과 인내심에 감동한 수도사들은 그녀를 다시금 수도원 안으로 받아들였고, 대신 가장 하찮은 일들을 담당하도록 했다.

She remained silent and raised the baby with care. Impressed by her humility and patience, the monks welcomed her back into the monastery and put her in charge of the most menial tasks. 

 

그녀는 하느님께 감사하며 어린아이를 정성껏 돌보고 온갖 궂은일조차 기쁘게 실행하며 살았다. 그러던 그녀는 병에 걸려 선종하게 되었다.

She lived a life of gratitude to God, taking good care of her children and happily performing even the most difficult tasks. Then she fell ill and died.

 

그녀의 시신을 수습하던 동료 수도사들은 그때서야 그녀가 여성임을 알게 되었다.

It was only then that fellow monks who collected her body realized that she was a woman. 

 

그들은 자신들이 하느님의 종인 그녀를 오해해 너무 많은 고통을 안겨주었음을 뒤늦게 깨닫고, 그녀의 시신을 정중히 모셨다고 한다.

It is said that they realized too late that they had caused too much pain by misunderstanding her, a servant of God, and held her body respectfully.
