성 라이네리오(Saint Rainerius)는 이탈리아에서 부유한 상인의 아들로 태어났다. 젊은 시절 그는 여러 도시를 다니며 연주하는 음악가로서 세상의 즐거움을 쫓았다.
Saint Rainerius was born in Italy as the son of a wealthy merchant. As a young man, he pursued worldly pleasures as a musician, traveling to various cities to perform.
여행 중에 그는 산양 같은 동물 털로 짠 망토를 걸친 알베르토(Alberto)라는 거룩한 사람을 만났다.
During his travels, he met a holy man named Alberto, who wore a cloak woven from the fur of an animal such as a goat.
알베르토의 권유로 그는 가난한 사람들을 돌보며 그들을 위해 일하는 수도자들을 보고 깊은 감명을 받아 죄에 물든 자신의 삶을 되돌아보게 되었다.
At Alberto's recommendation, he was deeply moved by the monks who cared for and worked for the poor, and he began to reflect on his life tainted by sin.
그래서 그는 진실한 그리스도인이 되기로 결심했다. 그는 그동안의 삶을 뉘우치는 뜻에서 먹기를 거부한 채 3일 동안 눈물을 흘렸는데, 그 후로 앞을 보지 못하게 되었다.
So he decided to become a true Christian. He refused to eat and cried for three days in remorse for his life, and after that he lost his sight.
그의 어머니가 날마다 주님께 기도한 결과 하느님께서 기적을 베푸시어 영혼과 함께 육신의 눈도 다시 밝혀 주셨다.
As a result of his mother praying to the Lord every day, God performed a miracle and restored his physical eyes as well as his soul.
1146년에 그는 예루살렘 성지를 순례할 비용을 마련하기 위해 상인으로 변신했다. 그는 사업을 위해 여러 항구를 방문하고 선원들과의 무역을 통해 많은 재물을 얻게 되었다.
In 1146, he turned to a merchant to raise money for a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in Jerusalem. He visited various ports for business and gained a lot of wealth through trading with sailors.
그의 여정은 어느덧 성지에 도착했고, 그곳에서 그는 자신의 모든 부가 하느님께 나아가는 데 방해가 된다는 것을 깨달았다. 그래서 모든 재물을 포기하고 완전한 가난 속에 살기로 결심했다.
His journey eventually brought him to the Holy Land, where he realized that all his wealth was hindering his path to God. So he decided to give up all his wealth and live in complete poverty.
그는 성지에서 7년을 마치 거지처럼 지내며 곳곳의 주님의 성지를 방문했다. 그는 고향으로 돌아와 엄격한 생활을 하다가 선종하였다.
He spent seven years in the Holy Land like a beggar, visiting various shrines of the Lord. He returned to his hometown, led a strict life, and died.
