성녀 제르마나 쿠쟁(Saint Germaine Cousin)는 프랑스에서 가난한 농가의 딸로 태어났다.

Saint Germaine Cousin was born in France as the daughter of a poor farmer. 

 

태어날 때부터 병약했던 그녀는 유아 때 어머니를 잃고 새어머니 슬하에서 자라게 되었다.

Sick from birth, she lost her mother when she was a toddler and was raised by her stepmother. 

 

게다가 새어머니는 혹시라도 자기 친자식에게 옮길까 봐 어린 그녀를 심하게 구박하고 집 밖으로 내쫓아 양 우리에서 양들과 함께 지내도록 했다.

Moreover, fearing that her stepmother might pass the disease on to her own children, she severely mistreated her and kicked her out of the house, forcing her to live with the sheep in a sheepfold. 

 

그녀는 음식 찌꺼기나 얻어먹으며 벽장이나 양우리에서 잠을 자야 했고, 아홉 살부터는 매일같이 양을 치러 나갔다.

She had to eat scraps of food and sleep in a closet or sheepfold, and from the age of nine she went out to tend sheep every day. 

 

전설적인 이야기에 따르면, 그녀가 미사에 참례하는 동안 양치기 지팡이를 땅에 꽂아 놓으면 양들이 그 지팡이 주위에 모여서 늑대들의 습격을 모면했다고 한다.

According to legend, while she was attending mass, she stuck her shepherd's staff into the ground and the sheep gathered around it to escape wolves. 

 

그녀의 깊은 신심과 지극한 참을성에 이웃 사람들도 점차 그녀에 대해 경탄과 애정을 갖게 되었다.

Her neighbors gradually came to admire and affection for her because of her deep faith and extreme patience. 

 

그녀는 이 모든 것을 선의로 받아들였고, 항상 누구에게나 도움을 베풀 마음가짐이 되어 있는 착한 소녀였다.

She accepted all of this in good faith and was a good girl who was always ready to help anyone. 

 

사람들이 그녀를 다르게 보게 된 계기는 어느 추운 겨울날, 그녀가 자신이 먹을 빵을 걸인에게 나눠주고 새어머니에게 심한 꾸중을 받을 때였다.

The reason why people started to see her differently was when, one cold winter day, she gave her own bread to a beggar and received a harsh scolding from her stepmother. 

 

새어머니는 그녀가 집에서 빵을 훔쳐서 걸인에게 준 것으로 생각하고 그녀를 때리려 했다. 하지만 그녀는 자신의 결백을 주장하며 앞치마를 펼치자 아름다운 봄꽃들로 가득 차 있었다.

Her stepmother thought she had stolen bread from home and given it to a beggar and tried to hit her. But she insisted on her innocence and when she opened her apron, it was filled with beautiful spring flowers. 

 

그 이후 새어머니도 마음이 누그러져 조금씩 그녀를 받아들이게 되었다. 그러나 얼마 후 그녀는 포도나무 가지로 엮은 침상 위에서 죽은 상태로 발견되었다.

After that, her stepmother also softened her heart and began to accept her little by little. But soon after, she was found dead on a bed made of vine branches. 

 

1644년에 그녀의 무덤을 열었을 때, 그녀의 유해는 전혀 썩지 않은 채 보존되어 있었다.

When her tomb was opened in 1644, her remains were completely intact.
