스하르베크의 성녀 앨리스(Saint Alice of Schaerbeek)는 매우 매력적이고 미모가 뛰어났던 어린 소녀였지만 자원하여 시토 수녀원에 들어갔다.

Saint Alice of Schaerbeek was a very attractive and beautiful young girl, but she volunteered to enter a Cistercian convent. 

 

이때 그녀의 나이는 7세였다.

At this time, she was 7 years old. 

 

철부지 어린 아이인줄 알았던 다른 수녀들은 그녀가 지극히 겸손하며 다른 수녀들이 행하는 모든 규칙과 고행을 서슴없이 실행하여 크나큰 사랑을 받았다.

The other nuns, who thought she was a childish child, were greatly loved because she was extremely humble and did not hesitate to follow all the rules and ascetics practiced by other nuns. 

 

그녀는 특히 그리스도의 다섯 상처에 대한 신심이 돈독하였으며, 성체를 모심으로써만 마음의 안식을 누렸다고 한다.

It is said that she had a particularly strong devotion to the five wounds of Christ, and that she enjoyed peace of mind only by attending the Holy Eucharist. 

 

1249년 갑자기 자리에 누은 그녀는 병자성사까지 받았지만 임종하지는 않았다.

In 1249, she suddenly lay down and received the Anointing of the Sick, but did not die. 

 

그러나 그녀는 두 눈의 시력을 모두 잃었고 또 고통이 너무나 심하였지만 그녀는 영혼들을 위하여 이 모든 고통을 기쁘게 참도록 늘 기도하기를 잊지 않았다.

However, although she lost the sight in both eyes and the pain was so severe, she never forgot to pray and joyfully endure all this suffering for the sake of souls. 

 

갑작스런 병을 앓은 지 꼭 1년만인 1250년 6월 10일 마지막 숨을 몰아쉰 그녀는 선종하였다.

She breathed her last on June 10, 1250, exactly one year after suffering from a sudden illness.
