성녀 루갈다(Saint Lutgardis)는 1182년 벨기에에서 부유한 부모의 딸로 태어났다.

Saint Lutgardis was born in 1182 in Belgium as the daughter of wealthy parents. 

 

그녀는 아버지의 뜻에 따라 한 귀족 청년과 혼인하기로 하였으나 아버지의 사업 실패로 지참금을 마련할 수 없게 되자 파혼을 당했다.

She decided to marry a noble young man according to her father's wishes, but the engagement was broken off when she was unable to raise a dowry due to her father's business failure. 

 

그래서 그녀는 12살의 나이에 어머니의 권유에 따라 성녀 카타리나의 검은 베네딕토 수도회(Black Benedictine convent of Saint Catherine)로 보내졌다.

So, at the age of 12, she was sent to the Black Benedictine convent of Saint Catherine at the recommendation of her mother. 

 

그러던 어느 날, 좋은 옷과 천진난만한 즐거움을 좋아하던 아리따운 소녀는 그리스도의 형상을 체험한 뒤 자신의 삶의 행로를 완전히 바꾸게 되었다.

Then one day, the beautiful girl who loved nice clothes and innocent fun completely changed the course of her life after experiencing the image of Christ. 

 

친구들과 함께 놀고 있는 그녀에게 나타나신 예수님께서는 당신의 상처를 보여주시며 당신만을 사랑할 수 있는지 물으셨다.

Jesus appeared to her while she was playing with her friends, showed her his wounds, and asked her if she could love only him. 

 

그녀는 즉시 예수님을 자신의 신랑으로 맞이했고, 20살이 되는 해에 베네딕토회의 수녀가 되었다.

She immediately welcomed Jesus as her bridegroom, and at the age of 20 she became a Benedictine nun. 

 

다른 많은 수녀들은 그녀에게 생긴 갑작스러운 열정이 얼마 가지 못할 것으로 생각했지만, 시간이 지날수록 더욱 커져만 갔다.

Many of the other nuns thought her sudden passion would be short-lived, but it only grew as time passed. 

 

그녀는 어떤 일이 주어지면 “주님, 잠시만 기다리세요. 일을 끝내자마자 다시 돌아올게요”라고 말하곤 했다. 또한 그녀는 그리스도의 수난에 동참할 때엔 이마와 머리에서 피가 맺혀 흐르기도 했다.

When given a task, she says, “Lord, just wait a moment. “I’ll be back as soon as I’m done,” he would say. Also, when she participated in the Passion of Christ, blood would form from her forehead and head. 

 

그녀는 더 엄격한 규칙이 있는 시토회 수도원에 들어갔다. 그곳에서 오직 빵과 물로만 지내며 극기 생활을 하였다. 또한 그녀는 영적 슬기로움으로 명성을 떨쳤다.

She entered a Cistercian monastery with stricter rules. There he lived a life of self-denial, subsisting only on bread and water. She also had a reputation for spiritual wisdom. 

 

하느님께서는 그녀에게 치유와 예언의 은사를 주셨고, 성경의 의미를 깨달을 수 있는 지혜를 넣어주셨다.

God gave her the gifts of healing and prophecy, and gave her the wisdom to understand the meaning of the Bible. 

 

그녀는 특히 기도에 열중했는데, 그녀의 기도는 신비롭게 이루어지는 일이 많았다. 그중의 한 예가 동정심이 없던 한 수도원장이 죽자 그녀는 그가 천국에 들지 못할 것을 걱정하여 그를 위해서 열심히 기도했다.

She was especially passionate about prayer, and her prayers often came true mysteriously. For example, when an unsympathetic abbot died, she prayed hard for him, worried that he would not enter heaven. 

 

어느 날 그가 나타나 그녀의 기도 덕분으로 연옥의 고통을 크게 덜게 되어 고맙다는 인사를 하고 사라진 일이 있었다.

One day, he appeared, thanked her for greatly easing the pain of purgatory thanks to her prayers, and disappeared. 

 

그녀는 1235년부터는 시력을 완전히 잃어 생애의 마지막 11년을 앞을 보지 못한 채 지내야 했다.

She lost her eyesight completely in 1235 and spent the last 11 years of her life blind. 

 

그러나 그것마저도 가시적인 세계에서 자신을 떼어놓고자 도와주시는 하느님의 기쁜 선물로 생각하며 모든 고통을 참아냈다.

However, he endured all the pain, thinking of it as a joyful gift from God who helped him separate himself from the visible world. 

 

예수님께서는 그녀에게 나타나셔서 언제 그리고 어떻게 죽음을 준비해야 하는지 알려주셨다. 그녀는 그렇게 받은 선물에 대해 하느님께 감사를 드린 후 죄인의 회개를 위해 끊임없이 기도하였다.

Jesus appeared to her and told her when and how to prepare for death. After thanking God for the gift she had received, she continued to pray for the sinner's repentance. 

 

그리고 하느님을 영원히 마주 뵐 시간을 기다리는 동안 그녀는 모든 것을 하느님께만 의지하였다.

And while she waited for the time when she would see God face to face forever, she depended on God for everything. 

 

그녀는 자신이 예언한 대로 1246년 6월 16일 64세로 선종하였다.

She died at the age of 64 on June 16, 1246, just as she had predicted.
