성 로무알도(Saint Romuald)는 이탈리아에서 귀족 가문의 아들로 태어나 풍족한 어린 시절을 보냈다.
Saint Romuald was born in Italy as the son of a noble family and had a prosperous childhood.
로무알도(Romuald)의 의미는 ‘명예, 영광을 다스리다’라는 뜻이다.
The meaning of Romuald is ‘to rule with honor and glory.’
20세에 아버지의 살인죄를 속죄하고자 수도원에 갔다가 40일을 머문 후 수도자가 될 결심을 했다. 하지만 보다 더 엄격한 생활을 하고자 수도원을 떠나 은수자가 되어 대단히 엄격한 은수생활을 시작했다.
At the age of 20, he went to a monastery to atone for his father's murder, and after staying there for 40 days, he decided to become a monk. However, in order to live a more rigorous life, he left the monastery and became a hermit and began a very strict hermit life.
그 후 아버지가 회개하고 수도자가 되었다는 소식을 듣고 고향으로 돌아온 그는 신성 로마제국의 황제에 의해 수도원장으로 임명되었다.
Afterwards, upon hearing the news that his father had repented and became a monk, he returned to his hometown and was appointed abbot by the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire.
이를 원치 않았던 그는 사임하고 다시 은수생활에 전념했다. 1012년에 그는 말돌루스(Maldolus)라는 사람에게 약간의 땅을 기증받았다.
Not wanting this, he resigned and devoted himself to life as a hermit again. In 1012 he received a small grant of land from a man named Maldolus.
그는 교구장의 승인을 받고 그곳에 다섯 개의 은둔소를 마련했는데 이곳은 나중에 카말돌리회(Camaldolese)라고 불리게 되었다.
With the approval of the diocese, he established five hermitages there, which later became known as the Camaldolese.
그가 생각한 수도생활은 베네딕토회의 수도 규칙을 근간으로 하며 수도원에서 함께 지내는 수도생활과 은둔소에서 지내는 독거 은수생활이 조화를 이루는 형태였다.
The monastic life he envisioned was based on the Benedictine monastic rules and was a form that harmonized the monastic life of living together in a monastery and the solitary hermit life of living in a hermitage.
그는 1027년 6월 19일 자신이 세운 은수처에서 평화롭게 선종했다.
He died peacefully on June 19, 1027, at the hermitage he had built.
