성녀 율리아나 팔코니에리(Saint Juliana Falconieri)는 1270년경 이탈리아의 부유한 귀족가문에서 신심 깊은 부모에게서 태어났다.

Saint Juliana Falconieri was born around 1270 to devout parents from a wealthy Italian noble family. 

 

그녀가 태어난 지 얼마 지나지 않아 아버지가 세상을 떠났다. 그녀가 어려서 아버지가 사망했기 때문에 집안사람들은 그녀를 유력한 집안의 남자와 결혼시키려 했다.

Not long after she was born, her father passed away. Because her father died when she was young, her family tried to marry her off to a powerful man. 

 

하지만 일찍이 숙부의 영향으로 봉헌 생활을 꿈꿔온 그녀는 결혼을 완강히 거부했다. 그녀는 자신의 영적 지도자의 권유에 따라 마리아의 종 수도회의 제3회원(the Third Order of the Servites)이 되었다.

However, she, who had dreamed of living a consecrated life under the influence of her uncle, stubbornly refused to marry. At the recommendation of her spiritual director, she became a member of the Third Order of the Servites  

 

그리고 어머니가 세상을 떠날 때까지 20여 년간 집에 머물며 기도와 자선 활동에 전념하였다.

And until his mother passed away, he stayed at home for 20 years and devoted himself to prayer and charity. 

 

어머니가 선종한 후에 그녀는 동료들과 함께 병자들을 돌보고 소녀들을 가르치는 일을 하기 위해 새로운 공동체를 설립하였다.

After her mother died, she and her colleagues founded a new community to care for the sick and teach girls. 

 

망토 수녀회(Mantellate Sisters)는 거리와 집, 병원에서 헌신적으로 환자를 돌보았다. 오랫동안 엄격한 단식과 기도, 자선에 충실했던 그녀는 1341년 6월 19일 선종하였다.

The Mantellate Sisters devotedly cared for patients on the streets, at home, and in hospitals. After a long period of strict fasting, prayer, and charity, she died on June 19, 1341.
