성 가말리엘(Saint Gamaliel)은 당시 유대 랍비 사회에서 최고 칭호인 ‘라반’(Rabban)으로 불린 율법 교사였다.

Saint Gamaliel was a Torah teacher called ‘Rabban’, the highest title in Jewish rabbinic society at the time. 

 

그의 이름은 신약성경 안에서 두 번 나타나는데, 첫 번째는 최고 의회 의원들이 사도들을 체포해 신문하다 격분해 죽이려고 할 때 일단 사도들을 밖으로 내보낸 뒤 다음과 같이 말하며 사도들의 생명을 구하였다.

His name appears twice in the New Testament. First, when the members of the Supreme Council were about to arrest and interrogate the apostles and kill them in anger, he sent them out and saved their lives by saying the following: 

 

“저 사람들 일에 관여하지 말고 그냥 내버려 두십시오. 저들의 그 계획이나 활동이 사람에게서 나왔으면 없어질 것입니다. 그러나 하느님에게서 나왔으면 여러분이 저들을 없애지 못할 것입니다. 자칫하면 여러분이 하느님을 대적하는 자가 될 수도 있습니다.”

“Don’t get involved in their business, just leave them alone. If their plans or activities came from humans, they would disappear. But if they are from God, you will not be able to destroy them. “If you are not careful, you may end up opposing God.” 

 

두 번째는 사도 성 바오로(Saint Paul the Apostle)가 예루살렘 성전 뜰에서 자신을 변호하며 말할 때, “나는 유다 사람입니다. 킬리키아의 타르수스에서 태어났지만 이 도성 예루살렘에서 자랐고, 가말리엘(Gamaliel) 문하에서 조상 전래의 엄격한 율법에 따라 교육을 받았습니다.”라는 말을 통해 사도 성 바오로(Saint Paul the Apostle)의 스승이었음을 알 수 있다.

He was born in Tarsus in Cilicia, but grew up in this city, Jerusalem, and was educated under Gamaliel according to the strict laws handed down to him by his ancestors.” Able to know.

According to church tradition, he and his second son converted to Christianity and were baptized by the apostles. Although nothing more is known about his activities as a Christian, he has long been venerated as a saint.
