성 가예타노(Saint Cajetan)는 1480년 이탈리아 귀족의 아들로 태어나 세례를 받았다.

Saint Cajetan was born and baptized in 1480 as the son of an Italian nobleman. 

 

그는 두 살 때 아버지가 전사하는 슬픔을 겪고 어머니 슬하에서 성장하였다. 그는 파도바 대학에 들어가 법학을 공부하고 1504년 민법과 교회법 박사 학위를 받았다.

He suffered the sorrow of his father's death in battle when he was two years old and grew up under his mother's care. He entered the University of Padua to study law and received a doctorate in civil and canon law in 1504. 

 

그는 1516년 9월 30일 36세의 나이에 사제품을 받았다. 1519년 그는 병원에서 가난하고 병든 사람들을 위해 열심히 봉사하였다.

He was ordained a priest on September 30, 1516, at the age of 36. In 1519, he worked hard for the poor and sick at the hospital. 

 

1523년 그는 교회를 개혁하고, 백성들에게 설교하며, 병자를 돕고, 최악의 상황에서 허덕이던 성직자의 신분을 개선하려는 목적으로 테아티노회(Theatines)를 설립하였다.

In 1523, he founded the Theatines with the purpose of reforming the church, preaching to the people, helping the sick, and improving the status of the clergy, who were struggling in the worst conditions. 

 

일반 시민들을 위한 그의 주요 업적 중 하나는 은행의 설립이었다. 후일 그는 고리대금업자에게 고통받던 가난한 사람들에게 돈을 빌려주는 일로써 시민들의 복리를 위해 일하였다.

One of his major achievements for ordinary citizens was the establishment of banks. Later, he worked for the welfare of citizens by lending money to poor people who were suffering from usurers. 

 

1547년 8월 7일 나폴리(Napoli)에서 그는 선종하였다.

He died in Naples on August 7, 1547.
