[천주교 세례명] “참회를 통한 개종자의 수호성인” 성녀 아프라(Saint Afra)

성녀 아프라(Saint Afra)에 대한 역사적 근거는 희박하지만 304년 디오클레티아누스 황제의 그리스도교 박해 때 오늘날 독일의 아우크스부르크 근처에서 순교한 것은 사실이다.

Although there is little historical evidence for Saint Afra, it is true that she was martyred near present-day Augsburg, Germany, in 304 during the persecution of Christians by Emperor Diocletian. 

 

전승에 따르면 그녀는 본래 매춘부로 로마 군인들을 위한 매음굴을 운영했다고 한다. 어느 날 박해를 피해 피신 중이던 주교와 부제(Deacon)가 모르고 그녀가 운영하는 집으로 들어갔다.

According to tradition, she was originally a prostitute who ran a brothel for Roman soldiers. One day, a bishop and a deacon who were fleeing persecution entered the house she ran without her knowledge. 

 

그녀는 그들을 위해 식사를 준비하고 주교의 기도와 가르침에 감동해 개종하고 세례를 받았다고 한다.

It is said that she prepared a meal for them and was so moved by the bishop's prayers and teachings that she converted and was baptized. 

 

그녀 뿐 아니라 그녀의 어머니와 하녀들도 모두 주교의 가르침을 듣고 그리스도교로 개종하였다. 그러고 나서 그녀가 매음굴을 폐쇄하자 불만을 품은 주민 몇이 그녀를 그리스도인으로 신고해 감옥에 갇히게 되었다.

Not only she, but her mother and maids all converted to Christianity after listening to the bishop's teachings. Then, when she closed the brothel, some disgruntled residents reported her as a Christian and she was imprisoned. 

 

그녀는 주교의 존재를 끝까지 감추고 이교 신상 앞에 희생 제물을 바치라는 명령도 거절하였다.

She hid the bishop's presence until the end and refused his orders to offer sacrifices before pagan gods. 

 

또한 하느님을 포기하라는 심문을 받자 “내 몸은 죄를 지었으니 벌을 받아 마땅하지만, 내 영혼을 이런 우상 때문에 파멸시킬 수 없다.”라고 대답해 주위 사람들을 놀라게 했다고 한다.

Also, when he was interrogated to give up God, he surprised those around him by answering, “My body has sinned and deserves to be punished, but I cannot allow my soul to be destroyed by these idols.” 

 

결국 사형 선고를 받고 산 채로 화형을 당해 순교하였다. 그녀의 시신은 어머니와 하녀들이 거두어 장례를 치르고 안장했는데 그로 인해 그들도 그리스도인으로 체포되어 화형을 받아 모두 순교하였다.

In the end, he was sentenced to death and martyred by being burned alive. Her mother and maids took her body, held a funeral, and buried it, but as a result, they were also arrested as Christians and burned at the stake. They were all martyred.
