성 도미니코(Saint Dominic)는 1170년 8월 8일 에스파냐에서 태어났다. 그는 어려서부터 신앙심 깊은 어머니에게 훌륭한 가정 교육과 신앙 교육을 받으며 성장했다.

Saint Dominic was born in Spain on August 8, 1170. He grew up receiving excellent home education and religious education from his religious mother from a young age. 

 

그는 팔렌시아(Palecia)의 대학에서 논리학, 수사학, 철학, 신학 등을 공부한 후 1196년 사제품을 받은 것으로 전해진다.

He is said to have been ordained a priest in 1196 after studying logic, rhetoric, philosophy, and theology at the University of Palecia. 

 

그는 북유럽을 여행하면서 인생의 전환기를 맞이하는데 그는 프랑스를 여행하면서 이단으로 인해 교회가 겪고 있는 고통을 목격하며 교회가 무엇을 필요로 하는지 깨닫게 되었다.

He reached a turning point in his life while traveling through Northern Europe. While traveling in France, he witnessed the suffering the church was experiencing due to heresy and realized what the church needed. 

 

즉 그는 이단을 척결하는 사명에 투신할 결심을 했다. 그는 십자군을 따라다니며 이단자를 상대로 설교에 힘썼으나 큰 성공을 거두지는 못했다.

In other words, he decided to devote himself to the mission of eradicating heresy. He followed the crusaders and tried to preach against heretics, but did not achieve much success. 

 

그러나 1214년 그는 여섯 명의 동료들과 함께 이단 알비파의 회개를 위해 활동할 공동체를 설립할 계획을 세웠다. 1216년 그는 교황에게 도미니코회(Dominican Order)의 설립을 공식 승인받았다.

However, in 1214, he and six associates planned to establish a community to work for the conversion of the Albigensian heresy. In 1216, he received official approval from the Pope to establish the Dominican Order. 

 

그가 설립한 도미니코회(Dominican Order)는 교회와 교황과 신앙의 진리에 충실한 하느님 중심적이며, 그리스도론적이고 사제적인 영성 생활을 실천했다.

The Dominican Order he founded practiced a God-centered, Christological, and priestly spiritual life that was faithful to the Church, the Pope, and the truth of faith. 

 

그리고 그리스도에 대한 신심 운동에서 자연스럽게 성모 마리아에 대한 신심 운동을 도출해 냈고, 특별히 묵주기도의 전통을 가톨릭교회 안에 널리 전파했다.

And from the movement of devotion to Christ, a movement of devotion to the Virgin Mary naturally emerged, and in particular, the tradition of the Rosary was widely spread within the Catholic Church.  

 

설교를 통한 영혼 구원이란 설립 목적을 이루기 위해 수도자들은 최선을 다해 공부해야 했다. 그는 자신의 남은 여생을 수도회의 정착과 발전을 위해 보냈다.

In order to achieve the founding purpose of saving souls through preaching, monks had to do their best to study. He spent the rest of his life working for the establishment and development of the monastery. 

 

그는 1221년 8월 6일 볼로냐의 수도원에서 선종하였다.

He died in a monastery in Bologna on August 6, 1221. 

 

그는 자신의 마지막을 지켜보던 제자들에게 “서로서로 형제들 간에 사랑하라, 겸손하라, 청빈을 자발적으로 실천함으로써 영적인 보화를 만들어가도록 하라.”는 말씀을 남겼다.

He left these words to his disciples who were watching his last days: “Love each other as brothers, be humble, and create spiritual treasures by voluntarily practicing poverty.”
