성녀 리카르다(Saint Richardis)는 840년경 프랑스 북동부 알자스(Alsace) 지방 노르트가우(Nordgau)의 백작인 에르찬가르(Erchanger)의 딸로 태어났다.
Saint Richardis was born around 840 as the daughter of Erchanger, Count of Nordgau, Alsace, northeastern France.
그녀는 22세 때인 862년에 독일왕 루트비히(Ludwig der Deutsche)의 아들인 카를 3세(Karl III)와 결혼했다.
In 862, at the age of 22, she married Karl III, the son of King Ludwig der Deutsche.
그들 사이에는 자녀가 없었다.
They had no children.
결혼한 지 19년이 지난 881년 성녀 리카르다는 남편과 함께 로마로 가서 교황 요한 8세(Joannes VIII)로부터 신성로마제국의 황제와 황후로 대관식을 올렸다.
In 881, 19 years after her marriage, Saint Richardis went to Rome with her husband and was coronated as Emperor and Empress of the Holy Roman Empire by Pope John VIII.
카를 황제의 통치 기간에 노르만인들이 프랑스 북부 해안을 지속해서 침략해 약탈하고 강을 따라 도시까지 내려왔지만, 황제는 효과적으로 이런 위협에 대처하지 못했다.
During the reign of Emperor Karl III, the Normans continued to invade and plunder the northern coast of France, raiding the cities down the river, but the emperor was unable to effectively deal with this threat.
887년 무능한 황제는 광기에 휩싸였고 위기를 극복하려 남편 대신 노력하는 아내를 시기한 나머지 자신의 욕심을 위해 성녀 리카르다를 대신과의 간통 혐의로 위험에 빠뜨렸다.
In 887, the incompetent emperor was driven into madness and was jealous of his wife's efforts to overcome the crisis, so for his own greed, he put Saint Richardis in danger by accusing her of adultery with a minister.
성녀 리카르다는 남편 앞에서 자신의 결백을 증명하기 위해 타오르는 불길 위를 지나가는 시험을 받게 되었다.
Saint Richardis was put to the test of passing over blazing fire to prove her innocence in front of her husband.
그녀는 맨발로 맹렬한 불길 위를 걸어갔으나 조금도 해를 입지 않아 누명을 벗었다.
She walked barefoot through the raging fire and was not harmed in the slightest, proving her innocence.
하지만 남편의 불신에 낙담한 그녀는 남편과 별거하기로 하고 친정의 보호를 받으며 황궁을 나와 알자스의 앙들로(Andlau) 수녀원으로 들어갔다.
However, discouraged by her husband's distrust, she decided to separate from him, left the imperial palace under the protection of her parents, and entered the convent of Andlau in Alsace.
여기서 그녀는 수녀들의 생활을 그대로 실천하며 보속의 삶을 살다가 평화롭게 선종해 그곳에 묻혔다.
Here she lived a life of penance, practicing the life of nuns, and then died peacefully and was buried there.
