이탈리아의 레체(Lecce) 인근 코페르티노에서 가난한 목수의 아들로 태어난 성 요셉(Saint Joseph)은 젊어서 제화공의 도제로 들어갔다가 몸이 약해 그만두고 집으로 돌아왔다.
Saint Joseph, who was born as the son of a poor carpenter in Copertino near Lecce, Italy, was apprenticed to a shoemaker as a young man, but quit due to weakness and returned home.
17세 때에 콘벤투알 프란치스코 수도회에 입회를 청하였으나 거절당하고, 카푸친 프란치스코회의 평수사로 입회했다.
At the age of 17, he applied to join the Order of Friars Minor Conventual, but was rejected, and joined the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin as a lay brother.
그러나 여기서도 8개월 만에 쫓겨났는데, 그 이유는 너무나 눈치가 없고 배운 것이 없었기 때문이었다.
However, even here, I was kicked out after 8 months because I was too tactless and did not learn anything.
그 후 그는 그로텔라의 콘벤투알 수도원에서 마부 노릇을 하는 한편 재속 프란치스코회에 가입해 17년 동안이나 이 수도원에서 살았다.
Afterwards, he worked as a coachman at the Order of Friars Minor Conventual in Grotella, while also joining the Secular Franciscan Order and lived in this monastery for 17 years.
이윽고 1625년에 그는 수련자로서 허락을 받았고, 너무나 지식이 부족했음에도 불구하고 1628년에 사제품을 받는 영광을 입었다.
Eventually, in 1625, he was admitted as a novice, and in 1628, despite his limited knowledge, he had the honor of being ordained a priest.
그는 곧 탈혼, 기적 그리고 초자연적인 은총 등으로 유명해졌다.
He soon became famous for his ecstasy, miracles, and supernatural grace.
그는 탈혼(ecstasy) 상태에서 여러 번 공중에 뜨는 경험을 했고, 미래를 내다보고 사람의 마음속까지 들여다보는 은총을 받았다.
He experienced floating in the air several times while in a state of ecstasy, and was given the grace to foresee the future and look into people's hearts.
많은 사람이 그에게 영적 지도를 받고 병을 치유 받기 위해 모여들었다.
Many people gathered to receive spiritual guidance and healing from their illnesses.
하지만 반대자들의 모함으로 인해 이단의 의혹을 받기도 했다.
However, due to the setup of his opponents, he was also suspected of heresy.
수도회 장상(superior)의 명으로 아시시(Assisi)에 은둔해 조용한 삶을 살고자 했지만 은둔 생활 중에도 그의 명성은 계속해서 전 유럽으로 퍼져나갔다.
At the order of his superior, he went into seclusion in Assisi and tried to live a quiet life, but even during his seclusion, his fame continued to spread throughout Europe.
그래서 점점 더 외부와 철저히 단절된 피에트라루비아(Pietrarubbia) 수도원으로, 그다음에는 포솜브로네(Fossombrone) 수도원으로 옮겨 다녔다.
So he moved to the Pietrarubbia monastery, which was increasingly cut off from the outside world, and then to the Fossombrone monastery.
그러던 중 교황 우르바누스 8세(Urbanus VIII)가 직접 성 요셉을 찾아와 그의 성덕과 성실성에 탄복해 그가 하느님의 특별한 은총을 받았음을 인정하면서 모든 의혹에서 벗어날 수 있었다.
In the meantime, Pope Urban VIII visited Saint Joseph in person and admired his holiness and sincerity, acknowledging that he had received special grace from God, thus freeing him from all suspicion.
1657년 그는 오시모(Osimo) 수도원으로 돌아와 여생을 보낸 후 1663년 중병으로 세상을 떠났다.
In 1657 he returned to the monastery of Osimo, where he lived the rest of his life, dying seriously ill in 1663.
