성 요나(Saint Jonah)가 하느님의 이름으로 선포한 예언의 말씀은 실제로는 “이제 사십 일이 지나면 니네베는 무너진다!”라는 한마디뿐이었다.
The prophetic words that Saint Jonah proclaimed in the name of God were actually just these words: “Now forty days will pass and Nineveh will fall!”
요나서에 의하면, 성 요나 예언자는 주님으로부터 “일어나 저 큰 성읍 니네베로 가서, 그 성읍을 거슬러 외쳐라. 그들의 죄악이 나에게까지 치솟아 올랐다.”라는 말씀을 받았다.
According to the Book of Jonah, the prophet St. Jonah received the following words from the Lord: “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it. “Their iniquities have risen up to me.”
그러나 성 요나는 주님을 피해 니네베 반대쪽으로, 당시 사람들이 세상의 서쪽 끝이라고 생각했던 타르시스로 달아나려고 배에 올라탔으며 주님은 바다에 큰 폭풍을 일으키셨다.
However, Saint Jonah boarded a ship to escape from the Lord to Tarsis, which was on the other side of Nineveh and was thought by the people at the time to be the western end of the world, and the Lord caused a great storm on the sea.
뱃사람들은 겁에 질려 저마다 자기 신에게 부르짖으며, 배를 가볍게 하려고 짐들을 바다로 내던지며 재앙을 피하려고 애를 썼다.
The sailors were terrified, each one cried out to his god, and tried to avoid disaster by throwing cargo into the sea to lighten the ship.
그러나 모든 것이 소용없자 그들은 변고의 원인이 누구인지 알아보려고 제비를 뽑았다.
But when all else failed, they cast lots to find out who was responsible for the misfortune.
그래서 제비를 뽑으니 배 밑창에서 잠을 자다 선장에게 이끌려 나온 성 요나가 뽑혔다.
So they cast lots, and Saint Jonah, who had been sleeping in the bottom of a boat and was dragged out by the captain, was chosen.
성 요나는 자기에게 모든 탓이 있음을 순순히 고백하고, 자기를 바다에 던지면 바다가 잔잔해질 것이라고 말했다.
Saint Jonah obediently confessed that he was to blame for everything and said that if he were to be thrown into the sea, the sea would become calm.
선원들은 “뭍으로 되돌아가려고 힘껏 노를 저었으나, 바다가 점점 더 거칠어져 어쩔 수가 없었다.”
The sailors “rowed as hard as they could to get back to land, but they had no choice as the sea became increasingly rough.”
결국 그들은 주님께 자신들에게 죄를 지우지 말아 달라고 청하며 성 요나가 청한 대로 그를 들어 바다에 내던졌다.
In the end, they asked the Lord not to place the sin on them and lifted him up and threw him into the sea as Saint Jonah had asked.
그러자 “성난 바다가 잔잔해졌으며 사람들은 주님을 더욱더 두려워하며 주님께 희생 제물을 바치고 서원을 하였다.”
Then “the raging sea became calm, and the people feared the Lord more and more, offering sacrifices and making vows to the Lord.”
주님께서는 곧 큰 물고기를 시켜 바다에 떨어진 성 요나를 삼키게 하셨다.
The Lord immediately ordered a large fish to swallow Saint Jonah, who had fallen into the sea.
사흘 낮과 밤을 물고기 배 속에 있으면서 성 요나는 주 하느님께 기도하며 감사의 시편을 노래하였다.
While he was in the belly of the fish for three days and three nights, Saint Jonah prayed to the Lord God and sang psalms of thanks.
“제가 곤궁 속에서 주님을 불렀더니 주님께서 저에게 응답해 주셨습니다.
“I called on the Lord in my distress, and the Lord answered me.
저승의 배 속에서 제가 부르짖었더니 당신께서 저의 소리를 들어 주셨습니다.
From the belly of the hell I cried out, and you heard my voice.
그러나 저는 감사 기도와 함께 당신께 희생 제물을 바치고 제가 서원한 것을 지키렵니다.
But I will offer you a sacrifice with thanksgiving and fulfill my vow.
구원은 주님의 것입니다.”
Salvation is the Lord’s.”
주님께서는 사흘 뒤에 그 큰 물고기에게 성 요나를 육지에 뱉어내도록 명령하셨다.
After three days, the Lord commanded the large fish to spit out Saint Jonah on land.
그리고 두 번째로 성 요나에게 말씀하셨는데, 처음과 같은 말씀이자 사명이었다.
And the Lord spoke to Saint Jonah a second time, with the same words and mission as the first.
성 요나는 이번에는 주님의 말씀대로 니네베로 가서 “이제 사십 일이 지나면 니네베는 무너진다고 말했다.”
Saint Jonah this time went to Nineveh, as the Lord had told him, and said, “Now forty days will pass and Nineveh will fall.”
그러자 니네베의 임금을 비롯해 모든 사람이 주님 앞에 나와 참회하며 열심히 기도하였다.
Then everyone, including the king of Nineveh, came before the Lord, repented and prayed hard.
하느님께서는 그들이 회개하고 악한 길에서 돌아서는 모습을 보시고 마음을 돌리시어 그들에게 내리겠다고 말씀하신 재앙을 거두셨다.
When God saw that they repented and turned from their evil ways, he changed his mind and withdrew the disaster that he had promised to bring upon them.
그런데 성 요나는 하느님의 이런 처사를 못마땅하게 여겼다.
However, Saint Jonah was displeased with this treatment of God.
니네베를 용서하시는 하느님과 그러한 하느님을 받아들이지 못하는 성 요나 사이에 갈등이 빚어졌다.
A conflict arose between God, who forgave Nineveh, and Saint Jonah, who could not accept such a God.
성 요나는 주님께서 자비하신 하느님임을 잘 알고 있었다.
Saint Jonah knew very well that the Lord is a merciful God.
그러나 정작 니네베 사람들이 예상과는 달리 재빨리 회개하고 하느님께서 그들을 용서하시자, 성 요나는 오히려 화를 내며 자기 목숨을 거두어 달라고까지 했다.
However, when the people of Nineveh repented faster than expected and God forgave them, Saint Jonah became angry and even asked for his life to be put to death.
그러고 나서 무슨 일이 일어나는지 보려고 성 밖 동쪽으로 가서 초막을 짓고 그 그늘에 앉았다.
Then he went outside the city to the east, built a booth, and sat in the shade to see what was happening.
주님께서 그 위로 아주까리 하나를 자라게 하시어 그늘을 드리워 고통스러운 더위에서 구해주셨고, 성 요나는 기분이 매우 좋았다.
The Lord made a castor plant grow on top of him, which gave him shade and saved him from the painful heat, and Saint Jonah felt very good.
그런데 이튿날 동이 틀 무렵 벌레 하나가 아주까리를 쏠아 시들게 하고 따가운 햇볕이 내리쬐며 뜨거운 동풍까지 불자, 성 요나는 “이렇게 사느니 죽는 것이 낫겠습니다.”라고 투덜거렸다.
However, as dawn broke the next day, a bug withered the castor plant, and the stinging sunlight and hot east wind blew, and Saint Jonah grumbled, “I would rather die than live like this.”
주님께서 성 요나에게 말씀하셨다.
The Lord said to Saint Jonah:
“너는 네가 수고하지도 않고 키우지도 않았으며, 하룻밤 사이에 자랐다가 하룻밤 사이에 죽어 버린 이 아주까리를 그토록 동정하는구나! 그런데 하물며 오른쪽과 왼쪽을 가릴 줄도 모르는 사람이 십이만 명이나 있고, 또 수많은 짐승이 있는 이 커다란 성읍 니네베를 내가 어찌 동정하지 않을 수 있겠느냐?”
“How much pity do you have for this castor bean that you did not work to raise, that you did not raise, that grew in one night and died in one night! How much more could I not sympathize with Nineveh, this great city with 120,000 people who do not know how to tell between their right and left, and with countless animals?”
요나서는 하느님의 이 말씀으로 끝을 맺는다.
The Book of Jonah ends with these words of God.
