마태오 복음서의 저자인 사도 성 마태오(Saint Matthew the Apostle)는 이스라엘 북부 갈릴래아 호숫가에 있는 카파르나움(Capharnaum)에서 로마 제국을 위해 세금을 걷는 세리였다.
Saint Matthew the Apostle, the author of the Gospel of Matthew, was a tax collector for the Roman Empire in Capharnaum on the shores of the Sea of Galilee in northern Israel.
“나를 따라라.” 하시는 예수님의 부르심을 받고 ‘일어나 그분을 따랐다.’
“Follow me.” After hearing the call of Jesus, ‘I got up and followed Jesus.’
당시 세리는 로마 제국을 대신해 동족에게 세금을 걷었기 때문에 멸시의 대상이자 죄인으로 취급받았다.
At the time, tax collectors were treated with contempt and as sinners because they collected taxes from their fellow countrymen on behalf of the Roman Empire.
그런데 ‘하느님의 선물’이라는 뜻의 히브리어 ‘마티야’에서 유래한 마태오라는 이름처럼, 어느 날 세관에 앉아 있던 성 마태오는 주님의 부르심 속에서 자비를 체험하고 열두 사도의 하나가 되었다.
However, like the name Matthew, which is derived from the Hebrew word ‘Matiyah’ meaning ‘gift of God,’ one day, while sitting at the customs office, St. Matthew experienced mercy in the Lord’s calling and became one of the twelve apostles.
그는 갈릴래아 태생인 듯하며 마르코 복음에 의하면 알패오의 아들로 원래 이름은 레위였다.
He appears to have been born in Galilee and, according to the Gospel of Mark, was the son of Alphaeus and his original name was Levi.
시몬에게 베드로(Petrus)라는 이름을 주신 것처럼, 레위 역시 예수님으로부터 마태오라는 새 이름을 받은 것으로 보고 있다.
Just as Simon was given the name Peter (Petrus), Levi is also believed to have received a new name, Matthew, from Jesus.
루카 복음은 레위라는 세리가 부르심을 받았다고 기록하고 있다.
The Gospel of Luke records that a tax collector named Levi was called.
‘예수님의 고을’로 불리는 카파르나움과 그 인근에서 세관원으로 일했던 성 마태오는 이미 예수님에 관해 많은 소문을 들었고 어쩌면 제자로 불리기 전에 예수님을 먼저 뵐 기회가 있었을 수도 있다.
Saint Matthew, who worked as a customs officer in and around Capernaum, known as ‘the town of Jesus,’ had already heard many rumors about Jesus and may have had the opportunity to see Jesus before being called a disciple.
열두 사도 중의 한 명인 성 마태오는 일찍이 초대 교회부터 마태오 복음서의 저자로 알려져 왔다.
Saint Matthew, one of the twelve apostles, has been known as the author of the Gospel of Matthew since the early church.
그는 특별히 유대교에서 그리스도교로 개종한 유다계 그리스도인들을 위해 히브리어 또는 아람어로 복음서를 저술했다고 한다.
He is said to have written the Gospel in Hebrew or Aramaic, especially for Jewish Christians who converted from Judaism to Christianity.
성 마태오 사도는 유대 지방을 순회하다가 “로마 순교록”에 따르면 에티오피아로, “예로니모 순교록”에 따르면 페르시아까지 가서 복음을 전하다가 순교한 것으로 전해진다.
It is said that St. Matthew the Apostle toured the Judean region and, according to the “Martyrologium Romanum” went to Ethiopia and, according to the “Martyrologium Hieronymianum” to Persia, where he preached the gospel and was martyred.
