성 미카엘(Saint Michael) 대천사는 교회가 전례에서 공경하는 세 천사(가브리엘, 라파엘, 미카엘) 중 하나이다.
Saint Michael the Archangel is one of the three angels (Gabriel, Raphael, and Michael) venerated by the Church in her liturgy.
‘누가 하느님과 같으랴?’라는 뜻을 지닌 성 미카엘 대천사는 구약성경에서 2번, 신약성경에서 두 번 언급되었다.
Saint Michael the Archangel, whose name means ‘Who is like God?’ is mentioned twice in the Old Testament and twice in the New Testament.
다니엘서에서는 이스라엘 백성의 보호자로, 요한 묵시록에서는 사탄의 세력을 상징하는 거대한 용과 맞서 싸우는 천상 군대의 지휘자로 등장한다.
In the Book of Daniel, Saint Michael appears as the protector of the Israelites, and in the Book of Revelation, Saint Michael appears as the leader of the heavenly army fighting against the giant dragon, symbolizing the power of Satan.
전설에 따르면 사탄이 하느님을 거슬렀을 때, 성 미카엘이 사탄에게 던진 말이 바로 “누가 하느님과 같으냐?”라고 한다.
According to legend, when Satan rebelled against God, the words Saint Michael asked Satan were, “Who is like God?”
뛰어난 영적 존재인 천사로 창조된 사탄이 스스로 하느님과 같이 되고자 하는 교만으로 타락하자 성 미카엘이 그에 맞섰다는 것이다.

그래서 전통적으로 성 미카엘은 악에 맞서 싸우는 모습으로 그려졌으며 성경에도 성 미카엘의 이름은 4번 등장하는데, 악과 맞서 싸우는 이미지로 등장하고 있다.
So, traditionally, Saint Michael was portrayed as fighting against evil, and in the Bible, Saint Michael's name appears four times, and he appears as an image of fighting against evil.
구약성경의 다니엘서에서 성 미카엘은 다니엘에게 나타나 페르시아에 맞서 싸울 수 있도록 돕고 재앙의 때에 이스라엘 백성을 보호하러 성 미카엘이 나설 것이라는 예언에 나타나고 있다.
In the Book of Daniel in the Old Testament, St. Michael appears to Daniel and helps him fight against Persia, and appears in the prophecy that St. Michael will go out to protect the Israelites in times of disaster.
또한 신약성경의 유다서에서는 성 미카엘이 모세의 주검을 두고 악마와 다투면서 “주님께서 너를 꾸짖으시기를 바란다”고 말했다고 기술하고 있다.
