성 고스마(Saint Cosmas)와 성 다미아누스(Saint Damian)는 아라비아(Arabia)의 명문 가정에서 태어난 쌍둥이 형제로 어려서부터 어머니에게 훌륭한 신앙교육을 받고 자랐다.
Saint Cosmas and Saint Damian were twin brothers born into a prestigious family in Arabia. They received excellent religious education from their mother from an early age.
그들은 시리아에서 의학을 공부하여 의사가 된 후 소아시아 남동부에 있는 실리시아(Cilicia) 지방 에게해(Aegean Sea) 근처에 살면서 외교인들에게 복음을 전하기 위해 환자와 가축들을 무료로 치료해주었다.
They studied medicine in Syria, became doctors, and lived near the Aegean Sea in Cilicia, southeastern Asia Minor, providing free treatment to patients and livestock to spread the gospel to diplomats.
의료기술이 뛰어나 명의라는 소리를 들었을 뿐만 아니라, 의약으로 낫기 어려운 병자들도 간절한 기도로 돌봐줘 육신과 영혼의 건강까지 치유해주는 의사로 신자와 비신자를 막론하고 모든 이의 칭송을 받았다.

3세기 말 디오클레티아누스 황제가 그리스도교에 대한 대박해를 시작했을 때, 성 고스마와 성 다미아누스 형제는 실리시아의 집정관인 리시아스(Lysias)에 의해 체포되었다.
When Emperor Diocletian began the great persecution of Christianity at the end of the 3rd century, the brothers Saint Cosmas and Saint Damian were arrested by Lysias, the consul of Cilicia.
곧바로 그들은 배교할 것을 강요당하며 모진 고문을 받았다.

하지만 굳은 믿음을 지니고 있던 이 형제는 끝까지 집정관의 요구를 거부하고 사형선고를 받았다.

전설에 의하면, 리시아스(Lysias)가 처음에 성 고스마와 성 다미아누스를 돌로 쳐 죽이려 했으나 그 돌이 되돌아와 던진 이들이 다치고, 다시 십자가에 묶어 놓고 화살을 쏘았으나 그 화살 또한 쏜 사람에게 되돌아와 꽂혀버렸다.

그래서 활활 타오르는 불 속에도 바다에도 던졌지만 죽지 않았다.
So they were thrown into a blazing fire and into the sea, but they did not die.
그래서 결국은 참수형에 처했다고 한다.

이때 성 고스마와 성 다미아누스 외에도 그들의 형제인 성 안티무스(Saint Anthimus) · 성 레온티우스(Saint Leontius) · 성 에우프레피우스(Saint Euprepius)도 함께 처형당했다.
