성녀 테오도라 게랭(Saint Theodora Guérin)은 1798년 10월 2일 프랑스 서쪽 브르타뉴(Bretagne) 반도의 이타블리 쉬르 메르(Etables-sur-Mer)라는 마을에서 안느-테레즈 게랭(Anne-Therese Guerin)이라는 이름으로 태어났다.
Saint Theodora Guérin was born as Anne-Therese Guerin on October 2, 1798 in the village of Etables-sur-Mer on the Bretagne Peninsula in western France.
안느-테레즈가 태어난 때는 프랑스 혁명(1789-1794년)이 끝난 지 얼마 되지 않은 시기였다.
Anne-Therese was born shortly after the end of the French Revolution (1789-1794).
혁명의 여파로 프랑스는 갈가리 찢어졌고, 학교와 성당들이 강제로 문을 닫고 사제들이 추방되거나 단두대에서 희생됨으로써 가톨릭교회 또한 위기에 봉착한 시대였다.
In the aftermath of the revolution, France was torn apart, and the Catholic Church also faced a crisis as schools and cathedrals were forced to close and priests were expelled or sacrificed on the guillotine.
안느-테레즈는 어릴 때부터 하느님과 가톨릭교회에 대한 애정을 갖고 있었다.

She received her first Holy Communion at the age of 10, and her parish priest at the time told her that she would one day become a nun.

For her mother, who was devastated by the loss of her husband, Anne-Therese had to take on not only the responsibility of caring for her mother and younger sister for many years, but also housework and gardening.
이런 고난과 희생을 겪으면서도 그녀의 신앙은 흔들리지 않았고, 하느님께서 항상 함께하신다는 사실을 굳게 믿었다.
Even through these hardships and sacrifices, her faith did not waver and she firmly believed that God was always with her.
25살 무렵에 안느-테레즈는 루이에 쉬르 루아르의 천주 섭리의 수녀회(Sisters of Providence of Ruillé-sur-Loir)에 입회하여 테오도라(Theodora)라는 수도명을 받았다.
Around the age of 25, Anne-Therese entered the Sisters of Providence of Ruillé-sur-Loir and received the religious name Theodora.
이 수녀회는 어린이들에게 교육의 기회를 제공하고 가난하고 병들고 죽어가는 이들을 돌봄으로써 하느님을 섬기는 젊은 수녀 공동체였다.
This convent was a community of young nuns who served God by providing educational opportunities for children and caring for the poor, sick, and dying.
그녀는 1825년 9월 8일 첫서원을 하고 이어서 1831년 9월 5일에 종신서원을 발했다.
She made her first profession on September 8, 1825, and her perpetual profession on September 5, 1831.
성녀 테오도라(Saint Theodora) 수녀는 일단의 수녀들과 함께 미국으로 건너가 인디아나(Indiana) 주(洲)의 빈세네스(Vincennes) 교구에서 학교를 설립하고 개척자들과 함께 하느님을 사랑을 나누기 위해 수녀원의 미국 모원을 설치할 책임자로 사명을 부여받았다.
Sister Saint Theodora moved to the United States with a group of nuns and founded a school in the Diocese of Vincennes, Indiana, and She was given the mission to be in charge of establishing a convent to share God's love with pioneers.
새로운 사명의 땅에 도착한 그들은 즉시 진흙탕과 좁은 길을 따라 성당으로 사용할 작은 통나무 오두막집으로 발걸음을 재촉했다.
Arriving at the land of their new mission, they immediately hurried along the muddy and narrow paths to the small log cabin that was to be used as a cathedral.
그곳에 무사히 도착하여 안전한 여행에 감사하며 새로운 사명을 위해 하느님의 축복을 청하는 미사를 봉헌하기에 앞서 무릎 꿇고 기도를 바쳤다.
Arriving there safely, I knelt down and prayed before offering mass to thank God for the safe journey and ask for God's blessings for my new mission.
그녀는 수녀들에게 다음과 같이 말했다.
She told the nuns:
“하느님의 손길에 부드럽게 자신을 맡기세요.”
“Gently surrender yourself to God’s hand.”
“우리의 희망은 하느님의 섭리 안에 있고, 하느님의 섭리는 지금까지 우리를 지켜주었고, 우리의 미래에 필요한 것을 어떻게든 마련해 줄 것입니다.”
“Our hope lies in God’s providence, which has protected us hitherto and will somehow provide for our future needs.”
처음 맞이한 겨울철 내내 북쪽에서 불어오는 매서운 바람이 작은 농장을 뒤흔들었고, 수녀들은 종종 추위와 굶주림을 겪어야 했다.
Throughout the first winter, bitter winds blowing from the north shook the small farm, and the nuns often suffered from cold and hunger.
그녀는 다음과 같이 수녀들에게 말했다.
She told the nuns:
“예수님과 함께라면 무엇이 우리를 두렵게 하겠습니까?”
“With Jesus, what should scare us?”
세인트 메리 오브 더 우즈에 도착한 지 일 년이 못 되어 성녀 테오도라(Saint Theodora) 원장은 수녀회의 첫 번째 학교를 개교하였다.
Less than a year after arriving at St. Mary of the Woods, Mother Superior Saint Theodora opened the congregation's first school.

She accepted trials, tribulations, and even unfair treatment as opportunities, and remained a true and faithful woman of God in the midst of suffering.
성녀 테오도라(Saint Theodora) 수녀는 세인트 메리 오브 더 우즈에 도착한 후 16년이 되던 해에 선종하였다.
Sister Saint Theodora died 16 years after arriving at Saint Mary of the Woods.
