성녀 파우스티나 코발스카(Saint Faustina Kowalska)는 1905년 8월 25일 폴란드 우치(Lodz) 시의 북서쪽에 있는 그워고비에츠(Glogowiec)라는 마을에서 태어났다.
Saint Faustina Kowalska was born on August 25, 1905 in the village of Glogowiec, northwest of the city of Lodz, Poland.
그리고 며칠 후 성 카시미루스(Casimirus) 성당에서 헬레나(Helena)라는 이름으로 세례를 받았다.
And a few days later, she was baptized with the name Helena at the Cathedral of St. Casimirus.
그녀의 부모는 가난하고 배운 것은 없었지만 신심이 깊고 올곧은 사람들로서 하느님에 대한 사랑과 순명, 부지런함에서 자녀들에게 큰 모범이 되었다.
Although her parents were poor and uneducated, they were deeply religious and upright people, and were great examples to their children in their love for God, obedience, and diligence.
그녀는 9살 때 첫영성체를 한 후 어려운 가정환경 등으로 3년 정도 교육을 받은 후 12살 때 이미 고향을 떠나 부유한 집에서 가정부 일을 하며 동생들과 부모님의 생계를 도왔다.
After receiving her first Holy Communion at the age of 9, she received three years of education due to a difficult family environment, and then left her hometown at the age of 12 to work as a housekeeper in a wealthy family, helping her younger siblings and parents.
그녀는 어려서부터 수도 성소를 느꼈고, 더는 학교 수업을 받지 못하게 되었을 때 수녀원에 입회하기를 원했지만 부모의 반대로 일단 성소의 꿈을 접을 수밖에 없었다.
She felt a vocation to monasticism from a young age, and when she could no longer attend school, she wanted to join a convent, but her parents' opposition forced her to give up her dream of vocation.
그러나 1924년 고통받는 그리스도의 환시를 체험한 후 더는 미룰 수 없다고 생각했다.
However, after experiencing a gnosis of a suffering Christ in 1924, he thought he could no longer put it off.
1925년 8월 1일 자비의 성모 수녀회(Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy)로부터 입회 허가를 받았다.
On August 1, 1925, she received permission to join the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy.
1926년 4월 30일 성체의 마리아 파우스티나(Maria Faustina of the Blessed Sacrament)라는 수도명으로 첫 서원을 했다.
On April 30, 1926, she made her first vows under the religious name Maria Faustina of the Blessed Sacrament.
그 후 그녀의 일상의 삶은 단순하고 두드러지게 드러나는 면은 없었지만, 늘 친절하고 자비심 가득한 마음으로 사람들을 대했고, 하느님과 깊은 일치를 이룬 가운데 심오한 영성을 키워갔다.
After that, her daily life was simple and unremarkable, but she always treated people with kindness and compassion, and developed a profound spirituality through deep unity with God.
성녀 파우스티나 코발스카(Saint Faustina Kowalska) 수녀는 많은 환시와 예언의 은사 외에도 충만한 영적 은총을 받았다.
Saint Faustina Kowalska received a wealth of spiritual graces, in addition to many gnosis and the gift of prophecy.
그녀가 체험한 가장 강렬한 환시는 1931년 2월 22일 저녁에 일어났다.
The most intense gnosis she experienced occurred on the evening of February 22, 1931.
이 환시는 이제까지 그녀가 보았던 환시와는 전혀 다른 것이었다.
This gnosis was completely different from any gnosis she had seen before.
흰옷을 입으신 예수님께서 한 손으로는 당신의 성심 근처를 움켜쥐고, 다른 손은 내밀어 축복하는 모습을 보여 주셨다.
Jesus, dressed in white, held his Sacred Heart with one hand and extended his other hand to bless.
그리고 예수님의 성심으로부터 붉은색과 흰색의 두 갈래 빛이 퍼져 나왔다.
And two red and white lights spread out from the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
예수님께서는 그녀에게 당신의 성심에 대한 공경을 전파하라는 사명, 바로 ‘하느님 자비 신심’을 전하라고 명하셨다.
Jesus commanded her to spread the ‘Divine Mercy Devotion’, a mission to spread reverence for His Sacred Heart.
예수님께서는 그녀가 본 환시를 그림으로 그리고, 그 그림 아래 ‘예수님, 저는 당신께 의탁합니다’라고 적도록 하셨다.
Jesus asked her to draw a picture of the gnosis she saw and write under the picture, ‘Jesus, I rely on you.’
그녀가 체험한 그리스도의 발현을 기념하고, 그 그림을 보고 공경하는 영혼들을 구원의 길로 인도하라고 지시하셨다.
He instructed her to commemorate the apparition of Christ that she experienced and guide the souls who saw and revered the picture to the path of salvation.
예수님께서는 성녀 파우스티나 코발스카(Saint Faustina Kowalska)에게 여러 번 나타나셔서 영적인 지도와 은총의 말씀을 주셨다.
Jesus appeared to Saint Faustina Kowalska several times and gave her spiritual guidance and words of grace.
예수님께서 그녀에게 하신 말씀은 그녀가 직접 기록한 일기에 담겨 있는데, 그 일기는 오늘날 “내 영혼 속 하느님의 자비”(Divine Mercy in My Soul)라는 이름으로 알려져 있다.
Jesus' words to her were captured in her personal diary, now known as “Divine Mercy in My Soul.”
이 일기에 기록된 성녀 파우스티나 코발스카(Saint Faustina Kowalska)의 사명은 세 가지로 요약할 수 있다.
Saint Faustina Kowalska's mission recorded in this diary can be summarized in three points.
첫째, 모든 인간을 향한 하느님의 자비로운 사랑에 대해 성경이 전해주는 신앙의 진리를 세상에 일깨워 주어야 한다.
First, we must awaken the world to the truth of faith that the Bible conveys about God's merciful love for all humans.
둘째, 예수님께서 보여 주신 ‘하느님의 자비 신심’의 실천을 통해, 온 세상과 특히 죄인들을 위해 하느님의 자비를 간청해야 한다.
Second, through the practice of ‘Divine Mercy Devotion’ shown by Jesus, we must ask for God’s mercy for the whole world and especially for sinners.
셋째, 하느님 자비의 사도직을 시작하는 것이다.
Third, it is to begin the apostolate of God’s mercy.
폐결핵을 비롯해 수많은 고통을, 죄인을 위한 희생으로 받아들인 성녀 파우스티나 코발스카(Saint Faustina Kowalska) 수녀는 1938년 10월 5일 33세의 나이로 크라쿠프에서 선종했다.
Sister Saint Faustina Kowalska, who accepted numerous sufferings, including pulmonary tuberculosis, as a sacrifice for sinners, died in Krakow on October 5, 1938 at the age of 33.
