성 브루노(Saint Bruno)는 독일 쾰른(Koln)의 귀족 가문에서 태어나 어린 시절 좋은 교육을 받았으며 문학에 조예가 깊었다.
Saint Bruno was born into a noble family in Cologne, Germany, received a good education as a child, and was well versed in literature.
1055년경에 쾰른에서 사제품을 받았다.
He was ordained a priest in Cologne around 1055.
그는 성직매매로 랭스의 주교좌에 오른 자신의 대주교 마나세(Manasses)를 탄핵하는 일에 앞장섰다.
He took the lead in impeaching his own archbishop, Manasses, who had illegally ascended the bishopric of Reims.
성 브루노(Saint Bruno)는 마나세(Manasses)를 고발하고 마나세(Manasses)가 직책에서 사임할 것을 요청해 이를 이루어냈다.
Saint Bruno achieved this by accusing Manasses and asking Manasses to resign from his position.
이를 눈여겨본 랭스의 교구민들이 그가 대주교가 되길 원했으나 그는 은수 생활에 들어갈 결심을 하고 있었다.
The parishioners of Reims noticed this and wanted him to become archbishop, but he decided to enter the life of a hermit.
성 브루노(Saint Bruno)와 동료들은 경당과 개인 은수처를 만들고 성 베네딕투스(Benedictus)의 규칙을 엄격히 준수하며 생활했다.
Saint Bruno and his companions built a chapel and a private hermitage and lived in strict accordance with the rules of Saint Benedictus.
이것이 바로 카르투지오회(Order of Carthusians)의 시작이었다.
This was the beginning of the Order of Carthusians.
그들은 극도의 가난을 실천하며 노동과 기도 그리고 성경을 필사하는 작업을 했으나, 그들의 규칙을 글로 기록하지는 않았다.
They practiced extreme poverty, working, praying, and copying the Bible, but they did not write down their rules.
은수 생활을 하던 중 성인은 교황 우르바노 2세의 부름을 받고 로마로 갔으며, 교황의 명에 순명하여 은수처를 떠나 성직자들의 개혁을 담당하는 교황의 고문관이 되었다.
While living as a hermit, the saint went to Rome at the call of Pope Urban II and In obedience to the Pope's orders, he left the hermitage and became the Pope's advisor in charge of reforming the clergy.
이후 교황은 성인을 대주교로 임명하려 했으나 그는 어떠한 명예와 권력도 원하지 않았다.
Later, the Pope tried to appoint the saint as archbishop, but he did not want any honor or power.
다만 교황에게 다시 은수 생활을 간청하여 허락을 받고 제자들과 함께 로마를 떠나 새로운 은신처에서 작은 기도소를 세우고 그 주위에 초막을 지어놓고 예전과 같이 엄격한 생활을 했다.
However, he requested permission from the Pope to return to life as a hermit, and after receiving permission, he left Rome with his disciples and lived a strict life in a new hiding place, building a small prayer house and a booth around it.
어떠한 명예와 권력도 원하지 않았던 성 브루노(Saint Bruno)는 1101년 10월 6일에 선종하였다.
Saint Bruno, who did not want any fame or power, died on October 6, 1101.
