성 후밀리스(Saint Humilis of Bisignano)는 이탈리아에서 태어났다. 세레를 받을 때 루카 안토니오(Luca Antonio)라는 세례명을 받은 그는 어렸을 때부터 신심이 경건하였다.
Saint Humilis of Bisignano was born in Italy. Baptized as Luca Antonio, he was devout from an early age.
수도자로 살고 싶어 했던 그는 27세가 되었을 때 비로소 프란치스코 작은 형제회(Friars Minor)에 입회하였다. 1610년 9월 4일 그는 수도자로 서원을 하고 후밀리스(Humilis)라는 새 수도명을 받았다.
He wanted to live as a monk, and only when he was 27 years old did he join the Friars Minor. On September 4, 1610, he took his vows as a monk and received the new monastic name Humilis.
프란치스코 작은 형제회(Friars Minor)의 평수사가 된 그는 사람들에게 구호금을 간청하고 공동체 미사에 참여하였으며 수도원에서 정원을 가꾸고 육체노동을 해야 하는 일을 기꺼이 담당하였다.
Becoming a lay monk of the Franciscan Friars Minor, he begged for alms from the people, participated in community masses, and willingly took on the tasks of tending the monastery's garden and performing manual labor.
영신적으로 매우 성숙한 모습을 보였던 그는 수도회 회칙을 철처히 지켰으며 자애심이 매우 많아 모든 수사들이 그를 사랑하였다.
He showed great spiritual maturity, strictly observed the rules of the order, and was so charitable that all the monks loved him.
그는 예언과 기적을 행하는 탁월한 능력을 드러냈으며 뛰어난 지식으로 사람들에게 신선한 충격을 주는 놀라운 은사(Spiritual gift)를 받았다.
He demonstrated outstanding ability to prophesy and perform miracles, and received an amazing spiritual gift that shocked people with his outstanding knowledge.
그는 교육을 전혀 받지 못한 문맹이었지만 성경에 관한 질문에 자신의 소견을 신중히 밝힐 때면 그 분야의 신학자들도 그의 탁월한 식견에 놀라움을 금치 못할 정도였다.
Although he was completely uneducated and illiterate, when he carefully explained his opinions to questions about the Bible, even theologians in that field could not help but be amazed at his outstanding insight.
교황 그레고리 15세(Pope Gregory XV)와 교황 우르바노 8세(Pope Urban VIII)는 그를 각별히 신임하여 그를 로마로 불러 기도와 조언을 부탁하였다. 그는 1637년 11월 16일 비시냐노(Bisignano)의 수도원에서 병으로 선종했는데 죽는 순간까지도 그의 고행은 중단되지 않았다.
Pope Gregory XV and Pope Urban VIII had great confidence in him and called him to Rome for prayers and advice. He died of illness at a monastery in Bisignano on November 16, 1637, and his asceticism did not cease until the moment of his death.
