성 요셉 마리아 피냐텔리(Saint Joseph Mary Pignatelli)는 1737년 12월 27일 스페인의 귀족의 아들로 태어났다. 어려서 부모를 잃은 그는 예수회(Society of Jesus) 학교에서 공부하면서 수도원에 기거할 수 있는 특별한 허락을 받았다.
Saint Joseph Mary Pignatelli was born on December 27, 1737, as the son of a Spanish nobleman. Having lost his parents at a young age, he received special permission to study at the Society of Jesus school and live in a monastery.
예수회(Society of Jesus) 입회는 자연스럽게 이루어졌고 1753년 15살이 되던 해에 입회하여 1762년에 사제로 서품되었다.
Joining the Society of Jesus came naturally, and he joined in 1753 at the age of 15 and was ordained a priest in 1762.
그는 학창시절 결핵에 걸렸는데 그 병은 평생 그를 따라다녔다. 사제가 된 이후 예수회(Society of Jesus) 학교에서 저학년을 담당하면서 주위의 가난한 이들이나 병자 그리고 수인을 돌보는데 힘썼다.
He contracted tuberculosis during his school years, and the disease followed him throughout his life. After becoming a priest, he took charge of the lower grades at a Jesuit (Society of Jesus) school and worked hard to care for the poor, sick, and prisoners around him.
특히 사형을 기다리는 죄수들을 자애롭게 돌보아 '사형수들의 아버지'라고 불렸다.
In particular, he was called 'the father of death row inmates' for his compassionate care of prisoners awaiting execution.
부르봉 왕국에 의해 예수회(Society of Jesus)가 탄압을 받기 시작하자 프랑스와 포르투갈 그리고 스페인에서 추방되었다. 급기야 1773년 7월, 교황 클레멘스 14세는 예수회(Society of Jesus)의 해산을 명하였다.
When the Society of Jesus began to be oppressed by the Bourbon Kingdom, it was expelled from France, Portugal, and Spain. Finally, in July 1773, Pope Clement XIV ordered the dissolution of the Society of Jesus.
그는 이탈리아의 볼로냐(Bologna)로 은거하여 약 20년 동안 공부를 계속하는 한편 예수회(Society of Jesus) 역사에 관한 자료를 수집하였다.
He lived in Bologna, Italy, where he continued his studies for about 20 years and collected materials on the history of the Society of Jesus.

In 1797, he made efforts to unite the scattered members of the Society of Jesus.
1804년 교황 비오 7세가 나폴리와 시칠리아에서 예수회(Society of Jesus) 활동 재개를 허락하였다. 1807년 로마로 장소를 옮긴 그는 예수회(Society of Jesus) 활동을 확대하도록 지시하였다.
In 1804, Pope Pius VII allowed the Society of Jesus to resume activities in Naples and Sicily. Moving to Rome in 1807, he directed the expansion of the activities of the Society of Jesus.
그러나 1811년 11월 15일 지병으로 로마에 돌아온 그는 예수회(Society of Jesus)의 완전한 부흥(1814년 8월 7일)을 3년 앞두고 선종하였다.
However, on November 15, 1811, he returned to Rome due to a chronic illness and died three years before the complete revival of the Society of Jesus (August 7, 1814).
