성 세르불로(Saint Servulus)는 어릴 때부터 수족이 마비된 걸인이었다. 그는 똑바로 서거나 손을 입에까지 가져갈 수도 없었고 혼자서 이쪽저쪽으로 움직이지 못하는 반신불수였다.
Saint Servulus was a beggar whose hands and feet were paralyzed from an early age. He was hemiparalyzed, unable to stand upright or raise his hand to his mouth, and unable to move from side to side on his own.
그의 어머니와 형제들은 그를 로마(Roma)의 성 클레멘스(Clemens) 성당 문 앞에 놓아두고 구걸하며 먹고살게 하였다. 그러던 중 그는 성경을 한 권 구입하였다.
His mother and brothers left him at the door of the Church of St. Clemens in Rome and made a living by begging. Meanwhile, he bought a Bible.
읽을 줄 모르는 그는 주의 깊게 성경을 응시함으로써 마음으로 이해하였다고 한다. 많은 세월이 흐른 뒤 그는 찬미가와 하느님께 드리는 감사가를 노래할 수 있게 되었다.
It is said that he, who did not know how to read, understood it with his heart by looking at the Bible carefully. After many years, he was able to sing hymns and songs of thanks to God.
그때부터 그는 자기에게 기부하는 사람들을 위하여 찬미가나 시편을 노래로 들려준 것이다. 그럴 때마다 사람들은 천국에서 들리는 이상한 음악으로 들었다고 한다.
From then on, he sang hymns and psalms for those who donated to him. It is said that whenever this happens, people hear it as strange music coming from heaven.
그 후 그가 선종하고 그의 유해는 성 클레멘스 성당에 안장되었는데 연일 기적이 일어났다.
After that, he passed away and his remains were buried in St. Clement's Cathedral, and miracles occurred every day.
교황 그레고리우스 1세(Gregorius I)는 성 세르불로(Saint Servulus)야말로 진정 하느님을 사랑한 사람이며 불구의 몸으로 그토록 아름다운 찬미가를 노래한 하느님 예찬자로서 높이 공경하였다.
Pope Gregory I highly revered Saint Servulus as a man who truly loved God and as a praiser of God who sang such beautiful hymns with his crippled body.
