성 안토니오 갈바오(Saint Anthony of St. Ann Galvão)는 1739년 브라질에서 신심 깊은 가정에서 태어났다.
Saint Anthony of St. Ann Galvão was born in Brazil in 1739 into a devout family.
그는 13살 떄 아버지에 의해 예수회(Jesuit) 신학교로 보내졌으나 잘 적응하지 못하였다. 그래서 아버지는 그에게 작은 형제회(Franciscan Order)에서 성소(Calling)를 찾아보도록 권유하였다.
He was sent to a Jesuit seminary by his father when he was 13, but did not adapt well. So his father encouraged him to seek a calling in the Friars Minor (Franciscan Order).
그래서 그는 1760년 4월 15일 성 보나벤투라(Saint Bonaventura) 수도원에 입회하였다. 1768년에 그는 설교자, 고해신부, 수도원의 문지기 등 중요한 직책에 임명되었다.
So he entered the monastery of Saint Bonaventura on April 15, 1760. In 1768 he was appointed to important positions as preacher, confessor, and gatekeeper of the monastery.
1769-1770년까지 그는 공동생활을 하는 은수자들의 공동체인 ‘성녀 테레사의 은수 명상의 집(Recollection of St. Teresa)’고해신부로 활동했다.
From 1769 to 1770, he worked as a confessor at the Recollection of St. Teresa, a community of hermits who lived together.
여기서 그는 깊은 신앙심을 갖고 참회 생활을 하던 성령의 헬레나 마리아(Helena Maria of the Holy Spirit) 수녀를 만났다.
Here he met Sister Helena Maria of the Holy Spirit, who had deep religious beliefs and lived a life of penance.
그녀는 예수님께서 자신에게 은수자들을 위한 새로운 은수 명상의 집(Recollect house)을 설립하라는 환시를 보았다고 주장하였다.
She claimed that she had a vision in which Jesus told her to establish a new recollect house for hermits.
1774년 2월 2일 그와 헬레나 마리아(Helena Maria) 수녀는 공동으로 ‘천주 섭리의 원죄 없으신 잉태의 성모 마리아 수녀회(Our Lady of the Conception of Divine Providence)’를 설립하였다.
On February 2, 1774, he and Sister Helena Maria jointly founded ‘Our Lady of the Conception of Divine Providence.’
1775년 2월 23일 헬레나 마리아(Helena Maria) 수녀가 갑작스런 죽음을 맞이하자 그는 갓 설립된 수녀회의 책임자 직무를 겸손과 신중함으로 떠맡게 되었다.
After the sudden death of Sister Helena Maria on February 23, 1775, he took on the role of head of the newly established convent with humility and caution.
그러던 중에 완고한 상파울로 당국 책임자로부터 수녀원을 폐쇄하라는 명령을 받았다. 그는 신앙으로 이 결정을 수용했고 수녀들 또한 순명했지만 수녀원을 떠나지는 않았다.
Meanwhile, an order was received from the stubborn authorities in Sao Paulo to close the convent. He accepted this decision with faith, and the nuns also obeyed, but did not leave the convent.
결국 대중들의 압력과 주교의 노력으로 수녀원은 곧 다시 문을 열게 되었다. 그 후 계속해서 수도 성소자들이 증가하자 더 넓은 생활공간이 필요하게 되었다. 그래서 그는 수십 년 동안 수녀원과 성당을 건립하는 일에 헌신하였다.
Eventually, through public pressure and the efforts of the bishop, the convent was soon reopened. Afterwards, as the number of religious vocations continued to increase, a larger living space became necessary. So he devoted himself to building convents and cathedrals for decades.
상황이 어느 정도 평온해 보일 때 시 당국의 또 다른 개입은 그에게 더 큰 시련을 가져다주었다. 자신의 아들을 화나게 한 어느 병사에게 총사령관이 사형을 선고하자 그 병사를 변호하던 그는 추방의 위험에 놓였다.
Just when things seemed somewhat calm, another intervention by the city authorities brought him further ordeals. When the commander-in-chief sentenced a soldier who had offended his son to death, he was in danger of being deported as he defended the soldier.
하지만 다시금 대중들의 요구가 성공하여 그 명령을 철회시킬 수 있었다. 말년에 그는 주교와 수도원장으로부터 상파울로 루스(Luz)의 은수 명상의 집(Recollect house)에서 머무를 허락을 받았다.
But again public demand succeeded and the order was rescinded. In his later years, he received permission from the bishop and abbot to stay at the hermit's Recollect house in Luz, São Paulo.
성 안토니오 갈바오(Saint Anthony of St. Ann Galvão)는 그곳에서 1822년 12월 23일 선종하였다.
Saint Anthony of St. Ann Galvão died there on December 23, 1822.
