마케이트의 성녀 크리스티나(Saint Christina of Markyate)는 영국에서 앵글로색슨족(Anglo-Saxon)의 부유하고 영향력 있는 길드 상인 귀족의 딸로 태어났다.
Saint Christina of Markyate was born in England as the daughter of a wealthy and influential Anglo-Saxon merchant guild nobleman.
그녀는 15세에 성 알바누스(Saint Albanus) 수도원을 방문하고 개인적으로 동정 서원을 하였다. 그러나 그녀의 부모는 이를 반대하고 버크트레드(Berktred)라는 한 청년과 결혼을 계획하였다.
At the age of 15, she visited the monastery of Saint Albanus and took a personal vow of virginity. However, her parents opposed this and planned to marry her to a young man named Berktred.
그녀는 자신의 혼인문제를 로버트 블로에트(Robert Bloet) 주교에게 가져갔고 처음에 그녀의 편을 들었던 주교는 후에 뇌물을 받고 자신의 판결을 변경하였다.
She took the matter of her marriage to Bishop Robert Bloet, and the bishop who initially took her side later accepted a bribe and change his decision.
결국 자신의 의지와는 관계없이 약혼하고 결혼한 그녀는 부부관계를 거부한 이유로 결혼 첫 해를 죄수로서 보내야 했다.
In the end, she became engaged and married against her will, and had to spend the first year of her marriage as a prisoner because she refused to spend the first night together.
그러다가 에아드윈(Eadwin)이라는 한 은수자의 도움으로 탈출에 성공한 그녀는 프램스테드(Flamstead)로 피신해서 2년간 알프웬(Alfwen)이라는 여성 은수자와 함께 생활하였다.
Then, she succeeded in escaping with the help of a hermit named Eadwin and took refuge in Flamstead, where she lived with a female hermit named Alfwen for two years.
그 후 1118년에 마케이트의 은둔소로 이주하여 복자 로제르(Blessed Roger) 은수자의 영적 제자가 되었다.
Then, in 1118, he moved to a hermitage in Marquette and became a spiritual disciple of the hermit Blessed Roger.
1122년 버크트레드(Berktred)는 요크(York)의 대주교로부터 혼인 무효판결을 얻어냈고 또 다음 해에 블로에트(Bloet) 주교가 사망함으로써 마침내 성녀 크리스티나(Saint Christina)는 마케이트에서 그녀의 남은 생애를 보낼 허가를 받게 되었다.
In 1122, Berktred obtained a Marriage invalidity decision from the Archbishop of York, and the following year, Bishop Bloet died, leaving Saint Christina to spend the rest of her life in Marquette.
그녀의 거룩한 삶에 대한 명성은 곧 다른 이들에게 알려져 그녀의 집은 베네딕토회의 작은 수녀원이 되었다.
Her reputation for holy life soon became known to others, and her home became a small Benedictine convent.
성녀 크리스티나(Saint Christina)는 요크, 퐁트브로(Fontevrault), 마르시니(Marcigny) 등의 수녀원 원장직을 제의받았으나 이를 거절하고 계속 마케이트에 머물다가 선종하였다.
Saint Christina was offered the position of abbess at convents such as York, Fontevrault, and Marcigny, but she declined the offer and continued to stay in Marquette before passing away.
