성 요한 프란치스코 레지스(Saint John Francis Regis)는 1597년 1월 31일 프랑스에서 태어났다. 그는 1616년 12월 7일 예수회(Society of Jesus)에 입회했으며 1630년 5월 19일 사제로 서품되었다.
Saint John Francis Regis was born in France on January 31, 1597. He entered the Society of Jesus on December 7, 1616, and was ordained a priest on May 19, 1630.
그는 동료들과 함께 흑사병으로 고생하는 환자들을 돌보았다. 이후 그는 가톨릭 신자들의 사목에 전념하였다. 그는 여러 지방을 다니며 신자들에게 설교를 하였다.
Together with his colleagues, he cared for patients suffering from the Black Death. Afterwards, he devoted himself to the pastoral care of Catholic believers. He traveled to various regions and gave sermons to believers.
그의 설교는 항상 간결하였지만 사람들의 마음 속에 깊은 감명을 주었다. 그는 많은 이들에게 고백성사의 은총을 베풀었고 어린이들에게 알기 쉬운 방법으로 교리를 가르쳤다.
His sermons were always concise, but they left a deep impression on people's hearts. He gave the grace of the Sacrament of Confession to many people and taught doctrine to children in an easy-to-understand way.
많은 사람들은 그를 통해 성령께서 일하심을 느끼게 되었다. 가난하고 병든 이들 그리고 여인들을 가장 먼저 생각하며 바쁘게 보낸 나머지 휴식은 물론 제대로 식사할 틈도 없었다.
Many people felt the Holy Spirit working through him. I was so busy thinking about the poor, the sick, and women first that I didn't even have time to rest or eat properly.
1640년 12월 죽음이 오고 있음을 느낀 그는 피정을 중단하고 3일간 자신의 삶을 정리하는 시간을 가졌다. 그는 건강 상태가 조금 호전되자 다시 활동하였으나 12월 30일 그는 간호하던 평수사에게 다음과 같은 말을 남기고 선종하였다.
In December 1640, feeling that death was coming, he stopped his retreat and spent three days organizing his life. He became active again when his health condition slightly improved, but he died on December 30, leaving the following words to the lay monk who was nursing him.
“주 예수님과 성모 마리아가 천국의 문을 열고 기다리고 계신다”
“The Lord Jesus and the Virgin Mary are waiting with the gates of heaven open”
예수회(Society of Jesus) 전 총장은 다음과 같은 말로 그를 칭송하였다. “분쟁으로 상처를 지니고 있던 사람들에게 그는 치유와 화해의 중개자가 되었다. 또한 가난한 자와 곤란한 자를 우선 도와주는 태도를 통해 그리스도를 드러내었다. ”
A former president of the Society of Jesus praised him with the following words: “He became a mediator of healing and reconciliation for people who were scarred by conflict. He also revealed Christ through his attitude of helping the poor and the needy first. ”
