알렉산드리아의 성녀 에우프로시나(Saint Euphrosyne of Alexandria)는 부유한 집안의 딸로 태어났다.
Saint Euphrosyne of Alexandria was born as the daughter of a wealthy family.
그녀의 부모는 오랫동안 자식이 없다가 얻은 딸이므로 그녀를 일찍 결혼시키기 위하여 노력했고 어느 부자 집 아들과 미리 결혼의 약속을 하였다.
Since her parents had been childless for a long time, they tried to get her married early and made a promise in advance to marry the son of a rich family.
그러나 그녀는 봉헌생활을 갈망하고 있었기 때문에 늘 가난한 사람을 돕는 일을 하며 생활하였다. 한 번은 그녀의 부친이 집에 없을 때 그녀가 태어나도록 늘 기도를 해왔던 어느 늙은 수도자가 찾아와서 그녀에게 수도복을 입혔다.
However, because she longed for a consecrated life, she always lived by helping the poor. One time, when her father was not at home, an old monk who had always prayed for her to be born came to her and put a religious habit on her.
그러나 그녀는 부친의 반대할 것을 생각하고 남자 수도복을 입고서 그녀의 부친이 자주 찾아가는 수도원에서 생활하기 시작하였다.
However, considering her father's opposition, she put on men's religious habit and began living in a monastery where her father often visited.
이떄부터 그녀는 스마라그두스(Smaragdus)라 불렸으며 그녀의 성덕(saints' virtues)과 영적 지혜는 유명해졌다.
From this time on she was called Smaragdus and became famous for her saints' virtues and spiritual wisdom.
그녀의 부친도 딸에게서 영적 지도를 자주 받았으나 스마라그두스(Smaragdus) 수도사가 자기 딸인 줄은 몰랐다고 한다.
It is said that her father often received spiritual guidance from his daughter, but did not know that Monk Smaragdus was his daughter.
이윽고 그녀가 운명할 즈음에 부친에게 자기의 신원을 밝혔고 그들은 화해하게 되었다.
Eventually, as she was about to die, she revealed her identity to her father and they reconciled.
이에 감동한 그녀의 부친은 자신의 모든 재산을 가난한 사람들과 수도원에 주고나서 곧 수도자가 되었다. 그리고 그는 딸이 살던 수도원에서 10년을 살다가 하느님 품에 안겼다.
Her father was moved by this and gave all his wealth to the poor and monasteries and soon became a monk. And after living in the monastery where his daughter lived for 10 years, he was embraced by God.
