클뤼니의 성 오딜로(Saint Odilo of Cluny)는 프랑스 귀족 가문의 막내로 태어났다. 그는 신학교에서 사제 서품을 받은 후 991년에 클뤼니(Cluny) 수도원에 입회하였다.
Saint Odilo of Cluny was born as the youngest child of a French noble family. After being ordained a priest at the seminary, he entered the monastery of Cluny in 991.
그는 994년 5월 11일 수도원장으로 선출되었다. 그리고 인자하고 자비로운 성품을 지닌 그는 동시에 뛰어난 조직력과 지도력과 통솔력을 발휘하였다.
He was elected abbot on May 11, 994. And while possessing a kind and merciful personality, he also demonstrated outstanding organizational skills, leadership, and command.
그는 성당에 피신처를 구한 사람을 체포할 수 없다는 규정을 만든 사람으로도 유명하다. 언제나 가난한 이들을 돕는데 관심을 기울였던 그는 1033년에 대기근이 일어나자 수도원 소유의 재물을 팔아 병자들과 가난한 사람들을 도와 주었다.
He is also famous as the person who created the rule that people who sought refuge in a cathedral could not be arrested. He was always interested in helping the poor, and when the great famine broke out in 1033, he sold his monastery's wealth to help the sick and poor.
그는 이러한 모든 일을 통하여 클뤼니 수도원의 기틀을 마련하는 일에 노력하였다. 또한 그는 어려서부터 성모 마리아에 대한 신심이 깊었다.
Through all of these things, he worked to lay the foundation for Cluny Monastery. Additionally, he had a deep devotion to the Virgin Mary from a young age.
그는 1049년 1월 1일 수비니(Souvigny)의 수도원을 방문하였다가 선종하였다.
He died on January 1, 1049 while visiting a monastery in Souvigny.
