성 요셉 마리아 토마시(Saint Giuseppe Maria Tomasi)는 시칠리아에서 귀족으로 태어났다.
Saint Giuseppe Maria Tomasi was born into a noble family in Sicily.
그는 어려서부터 좋은 교육을 받았으며 또한 교회 음악에 관심을 가졌다. 그의 재능은 수도회 총장이 높게 평가할 정도였다.
He received a good education from a young age and was also interested in church music. His talent was such that the superior of the religious order highly valued him.
1673년 12월 25일에는 사제로 서품되었다. 그러나 그의 일생은 거의 기도와 학문 연구에 바친 은수자의 생활이었다.
He was ordained a priest on December 25, 1673. However, his life was almost that of a hermit devoted to prayer and academic study.
그는 그리스 철학, 성경 등을 연구했고 그의 재능이 너무나 뛰어났던지 그의 히브리어 교사가 유대교에서 개종까지 하였다.
He studied Greek philosophy and the Bible, and his talent was so outstanding that his Hebrew teacher even converted from Judaism.
그의 첫 저술은 성 아우구스티누스(Saint Augustinus)의 "스페쿨룸"(Speculum)으로 알려져 있다.
His first writing is known as the "Speculum" of Saint Augustine.
1697년 그는 바티칸으로 들어갔으며 1704년에는 신학자로 임명되었다. 높은 지위에 있음에도 불구하고 그는 늘 겸손했다. 그리고 동료들과 함께 성가를 불렀으며 늘 초라한 음식을 즐겼다.
In 1697 he entered the Vatican, and in 1704 he was appointed theologian. Despite his high status, he was always humble. He sang hymns with his colleagues and always enjoyed humble food.
1712년 추기경에 오른 그는 자신의 죽음을 예고했는데 그는 다음과 같이 말했다. "교황께서 회복되시고 내가 곧 죽을 것이네" 그는 1713년 1월 1일 로마에서 선종하였다.
He was made a cardinal in 1712 and predicted his own death, saying: “The Pope will recover and I will soon die.” He died in Rome on January 1, 1713.
