성녀 멜라니아(Saint Melania)는 로마의 귀족의 딸로 태어났다. 그녀가 14세의 나이가 되었을 때 사촌인 성 피니아누스(Saint Pinianus)와 결혼했지만 자신의 뜻과는 아무런 상관이 없었다고 한다.
Saint Melania was born as the daughter of a Roman nobleman. When she was 14, she married her cousin Saint Pinianus, but it is said that it was against her will.
두 아이가 태어났지만 불행하게도 곧 죽었고 남편은 그녀의 신심을 인정하며 그녀의 부친이 사망하면 하느님께 대한 봉헌생활을 하도록 허락했다고 한다.
Two children were born, but unfortunately they died soon after. Her husband recognized her devotion and allowed her to live a life of consecration to God after her father died.
그녀의 부친이 막대한 유산을 딸에게 남기고 사망했을 때 그녀의 가족들은 로마를 떠나 신앙의 중심지인 자기 고향으로 돌아갔다.
When her father died, leaving a huge inheritance to his daughter, her family left Rome and returned to their hometown, the center of religion.
성녀 멜라니아(Saint Melania)가 자선사업을 목적으로 많은 재산을 사용하자 집안의 심각한 반대가 있엇지만 황제 호노리우스에게 호소하여 그의 도움을 받게 되었다.
When Saint Melania used a lot of her wealth for charity purposes, there was serious opposition from her family, but she appealed to Emperor Honorius and received his help.
그녀는 여러 성당과 수도원을 세우고 도왔으며 가난하고 병든 이들 보살폈다. 또한 포로들과 순례자들을 도왔고 노예들을 해방시켰다.
She founded and helped several cathedrals and monasteries and cared for the poor and sick. she also helped prisoners and pilgrims and freed slaves.
406년 고트족이 침입하자 그녀의 가족들은 누미디아(Numidia)의 타가스테(Tagaste)에 정착하였다. 여기서 그녀는 남자와 여자를 위한 수도원을 각각 세우고 그녀도 엄격한 수도생활을 하며 지냈다.
When the Goths invaded in 406, her family settled in Tagaste, Numidia. Here she founded separate monasteries for men and women and lived a strict monastic life.
417년에는 그녀의 가족들은 성지를 순례하였고 예루살렘에 정착하였다. 그녀는 439년 성탄절을 베들레헴에서 지냈으며 그 해 12월 31일 예루살렘에서 선종하였다.
In 417, her family made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and settled in Jerusalem. She spent Christmas in Bethlehem in 439 and died in Jerusalem on December 31 of that year.
